Forced Air due to Snorkels???

My Mantec faces rearwards, it cannot be rotated, so no "ram effect" (if that exists) but I notice no difference in performance at all.............the air filters on the other hand even over here stay cleaner, longer and as far as wading goes your a fool to do it without one imo................oh and they look cool aswell

A couple of years back there were some threads on homemade snorkles, which could save you dollars if you do want one. I did not note details, but one made from 3 inch stainless steel pipe looked good to me.

If we ever decide to fit a snorkle I will dig for that thread again.

depending on how far north you are travelling--my advice is --put one on considering the pickup being in the wheel arch where if there is going to be a little dust you will pick it up. Travelling only 35k on dirt roads out from Mt Surprise my air box and filter were full of dust. Also reported on this site [cairns boy] lost the inner plastic guard driving at Fraser Is totaled the engine --landy a writeoff--saw it myself in the workshop in Cairns. I have a safari snorkel, would not be without one.....!!!!!

Heres one from left field--- I agree that ram air effect would be minimal on , say, a safari snorkel , and I would be nervous about water entering the top during a wet season storm. However, I would consider fitting a circular glass precleaner to the top. I have spoken to A.R.B. ,and they supply them for the Safari snorkel, the young bloke said most people dont use them because they dont "look good"-- What say you, good people?

I think Graeme used one of these when we drove Hay River. From what I recall the Donaldson pulled a heap of dust out. Further research showed the new donaldsons also self clean the bowl by spinning the dust completely out.

Old style Donaldson pre-cleaners are designed for off road machinery at low speeds, not for highway speeds according to Donaldson. (yes i know, every man and his dog had one fitted to the top of the Cyclopac air cleaner on their truck or Land Cruiser back in the day)

The new Top Spins might be a better bet, but I'd check with Donaldson first.

This is where something like a Unifilter droopy might be better, it's just a pain to clean every day.

and as 87 County suggested, setting up an airbox without CFD and a lot of testing is a black art.

I was involved in some airbox testing nearly twenty years ago with a Magnahelic gauge (we expected the driver to read the thing taped inside the cockpit while driving around Amaroo

) and it was inconclusive.

We did experience a small increase in static air pressure but whether it was worth the drag of the bigger air box.....
I think we picked up more with redirecting the air inside the airbox with a change in air filter design and new bellmouths.
