I had 2 studs go and yes, it was like a fan belt slipping for noise. Had the studs replaced AND the webbing cut out and guess what.... they went again!
Now have stainless studs fitted and its been good for 15k. Fred Smith Automotive did them this time and he has never taken out the webbing on a manifold (oh yes, he had to replace the manifold as the original had already been machined to within an inch of its life) and whats more, he's never had one back where he has fitted the stainless studs...... has to say something

I didnt think S/S bolts would be any good in that application, thought they would work-harden to quick and not have enough give with the heating/cooling process, but looks like I'm wrong again..

I dont think it is the exhuast manifold, but just wanted an idea if/what to listen for when I get back and try and find the noise and whats causing it..

    Cheers Ean

Maybe a stainless flexible joint might save the bolts??? somewhere up close to the motor.
The way those smelly diesels rattle it's a wonder every bolt doesn't snap
