Thread: D2 split fold seats (x2) in cargo area forward facing??

Question D2 split fold seats (x2) in cargo area forward facing??

    Hi All,
it's been a while since I have been on and I hope you are all well.

    I have a question

Has anyone installed 2 single folding seats (from the middle row) into the cargo area FORWARD facing?

I'm not in a $ position to upgrade the landy and we need to make way for another baby seat. My rational was to remove the single folding seat from the middle row and install that along with another single seat into the rear cargo area - forward facing. (So basically there would be 2 seats in the middle and 2 seats in the cargo)

I have no need for seat belts as the kids will be in their own harnessed baby seats and the single ones come with the anchor bolt provision on the back of the seats. I do know that if the seats are side facing I can't use their baby seats as they need to be forward facing (well legislation states).

So, I am interested in knowing what would need to be done to fix two single seats forward facing to the cargo floor area. I don't need them to be folding at any point in time either... (kids are 2 and 3.5 y/o so they would be in their harnessed seats for eeons)...

    Thanks for your help :-)

    Lp

You would definitely need an engineer to certify the modifications which would be $$$. Also all the 7 seat models came with the air supension in the rear so maybe if you put in extra seats you would need to upgrade the rear suspension as well. More $$$.

I'm no expert mate but I think it would be a massive hassle as well as costly.

Sorry to rain on your parade

I would be more inclined to get the factory rear seats from a wreckers and get those installed.

    X2, and the belts ect.
The kid seats will need to be held at the bottom with a rated seat belt too.
Don't forget the insurance/rego side of things also.

Maybe the 3 year old to upgrade to a harness and boster seat(not sure of the last law change though)?
    Good luck.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Fabulous Frankston!

Ha, I grew up in Frankston. I even have an I love Frankston sticker for my car!!

Did you see that episode of the footy show with Sam interviewing some of the locals in Franga. The hosts were talking about it for weeks...

    Anyway back on topic now,

The logic of your idea is good but because it is unusual I would agree with everyone else that it may be a lot of money and hassle

    Cheers

Thanks all for your replies... I think I will research this more. I know of a company where I can get seats for the cargo area forward facing with loss of the side panniers and all legal for between 2 and 2.5K fully installed and warranted (can't remember if they had the anchor points tho)... however I lose the boot space for a mountain buggy double pram with those (which seems to be the case with alot of these newer 4wd - they may be 7 seaters but don't take into account what you need to get toddlers around (3 of em all under 3.5yrs + the NB in Feb!!)

I'd like to think that there are ways around things legally (mmm or not!!) ... perhaps I shall post my findings for future reference for others as the two single seats at the rear / middle seem to be a better option :-)

As for engineers, does anyone have any contacts for me as a starting point - I have no idea who I'd need to speak further with about this type of scenario...

As for your reply Michael, i'm probably a small minority here... I loath AFL with a passion!! (give me ice hockey any day... i'd rather pay to see a bunch of AFL blokes go a match with ice hockey players!)

    Cheers

I have a d2 with aftermarket fwd facing seats (done so well they even matched the fabric) with coils and the std ones at that, Engineered and no suspension upgrade noted as done or required. The fold fwd then up to the side but I wouldn't want to put a baby seat in those.

How many kids do you have? (& ages) Obviously the two in seats, plus? Just asking to look at what options you may have.

    G'Day Landy Princess : )
I think what you are looking to achieve can be done much more simply and easily by utilising standard parts. Add a standard rear seat on on side (preference being pax side furthest from traffic).
Use the existing tie-down points to hold your pram on it's side. good to go.
Alternatively, buy or make something like this:
Motorcycle Carrier Hitch Cargo Carrier | etrailer.com
to hold the pram on the outside. Add a cover and you're good to go.
Heeeeaaaps easier to achieve. All the tricky engineering paid for by Landrover ages ago.
    Hope this helps.

    We have a 3.5 year old, 2 year old and a 10 month old (that's 3) + #4 arriving end jan...
They all need to be in seats, all of which are harnessed and as pointed out because my stoopid pregnant brain forgot - do need seat belts to go through the back of the baby seats.

... as for me... I like the thinking outside the square... any suggestions welcomed

    Thanks,

    Lp

    Thanks Dave...
The carrier sounds like a great idea, but i'd be worried about some numpty doing something to the pram. unfortunately the prams don't come with hardcovers :-( (and hubby wouldn't fit on one either - HA!!)

If I have understood your post.... you are suggesting to have a rear seat sideways facing? If so, unfortunately it's not something I can have legally with current legislation, all the seats need to be strapped in with them sitting forward.

    Or...

are you suggesting to have a standard rear seat some other way? When you mention standard rear seat, is that the ones that fold up into the pannier space?

    Could you please clarify...

    Thanks
    Lp
