Hey mate, I was quoted $5500 if i remember correctly for a 4.6 short motor by Ritters but I just rang as a blow in, I didn't tell him I was a forum member or anything, just curious.
Don't quote me on that, memory is full of holes now days![]()
Ok guys its time for an engine upgrade, I'm considering going to the 4.6 my 4.0 has finally cracked under the pressure(no pun intended) and the upgrade is the best solution, it appears easy enough to change motors over, where is the best place to find a coscast short motor as i believe the heads sump etc are fine to transfer from current engine, any special things i need to know tossing up whether to do myself with mates or pay mechanic to do. Any help at this early stage is appreciated.
I've been told this upgrade will change my life bigger torque, hp and better fuel economy.
Oh its a 2004

Clintox,
The 4.6 does give a major improvement in drivability over the 4.0, and will put a smile on your face, but in my experience it makes no noticable difference to fuel consumption. Mine needs 95 octane and prefers 97 octane. It will run on ULP, but does not perform with it.
Make sure that you use "top hat" liners, to eliminate any possibility of future liner slippage. I didn't. I bought a factory new engine, which gave me a good warranty, but for peace of mind I wish I had bought a rebuilt engine with top hat liners.
TriumphRoverSpares in Lonsdale, Adelaide, regularly offer 4.6 short motors and long motors, including rebuilt ones with top hat liners, and in my experience are very good to do business with.
I second TRS, having said that I also have my issues with them as some of their prices are very left field where 2nd hand costs more than new.
I do believe they have a 5L in their atm for $5k.
Give them a call and ask for Ian. Phil(other partner) is very shall I say rude!!!!!
I did see there 5L engine my concerns would be drive line with that sort of engine.
I assumed the coscast did not need the top hat liners as they were a better cast
Is yours an auto in which case it will probably handle it.
The manual I have my doubts.
Give them a call and see what they think.
I had a high comp engine with worked heads and Haltech in jection done by them.
That thing was owesome.
I had the auto box
Yeh it's an auto. Will give them a call
geez got a few prices couple of secondhand engines I'm not fond of this idea would prefer new. my questions are:
what gear can be interchangeable with the 4.0 and 4.6?
should I just go for a short block and rebuild rest with my engine?
maybe a little more grunt for towing options?
everyone keeps telling me to get rid of car but i love my disco!!
I'd be concerned about putting tophats in somehow,,
and yes, most of the bolt on stuff should---

Ritters told me everything was inter changeable between 4L running gear & 4.6 block but what they also told me is that they wouldn't do it, apparently I couldn't afford to pay what they would charge to pull my motor apart, check all the tolerances to ensure my running gear wasn't going to destroy a brand new 4.6L block and they would NOT guarantee the work as all the parts etc hadn't been purchased from them!!!???
If you do go the second hand replacement option as I did, 12 months parts & labour warranty as a minimum and if possible, retain your old motor, I'm sure there's plenty of stuff attached you can either sell or keep in case of failure in the future by your starter or alternator etc.
