    best oil for transfer case?

    ok, im slowly making my way through doing all oil change outs.

    i only have the one leak, coming from above or on the side of the TC.

    my question is, is there an oil i can use, that will slow the leaking?

    i know i can use thicker visc oil, but maybe there is an additive?

    i drop maybe 2 or 3 drops at the end of driving and obviously some during the journeys... but i would like to try and slow it as i really cant be bothered trying to fix it after reading how much money people have spent on trying to find the actual leak point.

    any help would be great, otherwise i might just try a thicker oil

    i should add, i know what oils to use, just if anyone has found a particular oil that slows the leaking slightly.

    or any additives.

    ok well ive changed oil... went from nulon to castrol...

    will see if there is much change and will measure the leak after 2 months.

    didnt find anything in the shops that worked as an additive

    does the D2 use 80W90 gear oil like the D1?

    In the end unless you change to a thicker oil you wont slow any of the leaking down.

    Im using Valvoline 80W90 gear oil at the moment but just bought a bottle of Caltex 80W90 gear oil for the next round.

    Just bought Delo 400 for the engine also.

    yeah i went from a 75w90 to a 80w90 which is probably not going to be noticeable at all... but its not too bad anyway, i lost about 100ml in 4 months.

    and yes, it does, transfer case and diffs use same oil

    I am using the LSA Gearsyn full synthetic in my diffs and TC and am very happy with it.
    There is no such thing (yet) as an oil which slows or stops leaks without affecting lubrication requirements. You may try an additive from Supercheap/ Repco, but at best you will only prolong the inevitable. If you dont want to change the o-rings just buy a driptray.
    The oil leak reffered to here is associated with the TC idler shaft o-rings. Unfortunately you have to remove the TC to change them but a very easy and quick job when its off.

    i have just started having a leak from the front output shaft seal on my T/C .
    just dropping a few drops of oil after its gets heated up to running temperature.
    do the output flanges get wear on them or will i be able to just change the output seal ?
    looks a pretty straight forward job to me just remove front prop shaft and take of flange and seal. am i missing anything ?

    I use Castrol Syntrax 75-90 in mine,

    Changed the oil today as I fitted a high capacity cooling sump, I must say I was quite surprised in how good the condition of the oil was and it had been in there 15,000 miles, now the new sump is on and has more oil in it, it should be even better next time its dropped.

    Pretty easy job as you describe, heres a write up for the rear output seal, front is basically the same but obviously no handbrake involved.
