Had this exact same thing happen to mine the other day and it was the prelim to a fuel pump failure... Now waiting on new pump. Not what you want to hear and I hope for your sake it isn't but worth checking.

Fuel filter is always a good thing, but before you start fiddling with the wastegate, check the boost modulator isnt stuck open.
You can do a static check on the wastegate setting with an aircompressor and a blowgun. Turn regulator to 0 and gradually increase until you feel the wastegate arm start to move and that will be the max boost its developing. Helps if you have a second pair of hands to do this one.
If you can get your hands on a Nanocom, check the list of fault codes for clues where to start looking.

I didn't get the on/off/on when my fuel pump died the other day, but the occasional deadness over 2500rpm I definately did have. Sometimes it would be dead like that, the I had it for 1.5 hours on the highway without a problem, then it when doughy at 2500rpm again and then it died.

When you say sometimes it does it, is it on slow acceleration or hard accelerartion or both?
When my boost controller failed if I tried to accelerate quickly Eg pulling out into traffic it would cut out and be a slug and could barely get to 80km/hr. But if I slowly acclerated I could easily get to 100km/hr.
When my fuel pump started to fail the vehicle was running rough, and the vehicle would just quit. Would have trouble starting it, would run for awhile and quit. The fuel pump lasted for less than a day with these symptoms before it died.

Sometimes: On anything over moderate acceleration. If I sort of idle off and drive 'soft' it will rev, but still has nothing much over 3000.

If you put your foot down a little, for say a fast take off....it surges and carries on then.

It sounds very similar to what you had with the boost controller.

My boost modulator has been bypassed - I don't have the tech on how to do this, but its on here somewhere. Graeme

as Stig said, could be your MAF. Have you tried disconecting it?
