    steering slack

Hi Guys, a hand if you please,
so i've noticed whilst sometimes turning right, as the weight lifts off the right hand side of the car i get a "clunk" coming from the front right corner somewhere? Nothing earth shattering but noticeable.
I also noticed whilst changing cars around in the driveway that if i jerk the steering wheel left & right about 2" either way whilst moving slowly there seems to be a it of slack and noise in the steering somewhere? Also if driving along a bumpy road there's a noise like something is loose, hasn't gotten any better or worse sine i've owned it but now i've got the motor issues sorted (touch wood), its time to address some other, running maintenance shall we say.
Is there a common issue here and is there something i should be looking to tighten up that may solve the issue?
Shocks & springs seem fine, no other symptoms i can think of that may make it easier to diagnose over the net rather than experiencing it in person.
    Cheers to all

So i've got the GLW (good lady wife) to rock the steering back and forth whilst i inspected the steering, seems ok between the steering wheel and the power steering box, how would a knackered steering damper affect this? How could i tell if the steering damper is stuffed? I dunno if they are oil or gas filled but there's not oil leaking from it?
    Cheers again

Sounds like anti roll bar bushes imo, they often "knock" when going round bends, cheap and easy to replace and common to wear as well.

I have the exact problem had the GLW rocking the steering while under the d2 it's definitely coming from the steering box there is a bolt to adjust the steering slackness did that and still there is a clunk it's driving me insane. The anti roll bars are not moving also I have taken off the dampened and it's not that is there another adjustment or is the steering box stuffed? Please any advice

it most likely wont fix the problem though it will fix the slackness in the steer wheel, its located right on top with an 18mm bolt which you losen then tighten the allan key a little.

Check your panhard rod bolts and bushes, particularly the clevis at the chassis end for tightness or wear.

This is a common problem on 'classic' suspensions, (DI, RRC, Defender) so I don't see why a DII would be immune to it.

was under the hood today, and i cant see anywhere on the panhard rod bolts or bushes that are making this noise....and it only cluncks when the engine is running, when the engine is off you can try turn the wheel back and forth and there is no cluncks....

must be inside the steering box, there must be more d2 owners that have encounted this.....

    Yup, given me the poops!!!
Mine doesn't seem to be affecting the handling so much though, just around slower corners?
Does yours clunk going round a sweeping bend at all?
