I leave my clutch in.
I have heard of a fellow member having a winch self start while washing at the car wash post trip.
A few people fitt cut out switchs on the main power wire as a precation.
Took us a bit longer than first anticipated, but after biting the bullet and buying the correct TJM cradle, got the winch fitted. Big thanks to BST4X4XFA for not only the help of getting it on, but also for the loan of his Doofer for the night as I left the D2 parked on his drive overnight til we'd finished it.
Pics below, but I do have one question:
The label on the winch quite specifically states that the clutch should be released when the winch is not in use. But when I release it (while its coiled), the rope goes slack, and doesn't quite seem right to me. Surely with the clutch off, the rope has the ability to slacken off and unwind quite a bit? Obviously not enough to unwind its self out! I have temporarily left the clutch on, and this holds the rope and coil nice and firm (oo-er!).
What do you guys do? Leave the clutch on or off while driving around? What difference could it honestly make?

The wire "unspooling" when the clutch is disengaged is a natural symptom of wire rope, you may be able to reduce it by fully unwinding the cable and re-spooling it under load (which you should do with a new winch install).
Leaving the clutch in would do no harm to the winch at all, BUT if you dunk your winch a few times and its not "sealed" very well (new ones genrally have better sealing nowadays) , water will sit in the gearbox and "possibly" corrode the clutch "in" if its a long time between uses, so when you come to disengage it for free spooling, it may be a real pain to do.
As already mentioned, for safety reasons, whether the clutch is in or out ANY winch should have an electrical cut out fitted to it just incase anything goes wrong otherwise how would you stop it in a hurry if a problem occurs. More shopping and wiring Im afraid![]()
Yep, we did that straight away after we'd finished; hooked it up to Jurgens Doofer and pulled it up the street.
