Thread: A few quick questions

Gday Chris,

I got the 3 boots (gearstick,hi/low,handbrake)from 1 of the UK suppliers and had no prob's easy to fit and well made,seemed easier than getting one's made here.
The stereo, I would think aftermarket would be a better option, you will only end up with 2nd hand and my CD stacker is starting to play up, would think ipod compatable would be the way to go.
Not sure about the wheel cover, maybe 1 of the wreckers, or send Bundalene a PM, he may have something..

Hi Chris.

I got the boots off ebay, very easy to fit and good quality.
Just a hint, if you can't slip it over the handbrake, just wet the leather a little bit and it will stretch, then as it dries it shrinks back.

I put an aftermarket CD player (MP3) and haven't looked back, just get some universal din sockets to wire it up to.

Can't help on the wheel cover though?

Sounds like the boot from the UK sellers is a no brainer.

An aftermarket head unit sounds like the way to go. It sounds easy enough to do, compared to most stereo swaps I've done in the past.

Strange about the spare wheel cover though, I'd have thought they'd be a readily available item.

Another quick question in regard to the installation of an aftermarket head unit.

I've go an Alpine head unit sitting in the garage, with ipod interface goodness.
It's similar to this model ( Alpine Electronics of Australia ), just a little older.

If I was to plug and play this type of HU into the existing wiring loom with an adapter, would I still have functionality of the steering wheel controls?

I replaced a dying factory head unit with a Kenwood unit and got the steering wheel buttons to operate.
The D2's dash loom has ISO/DIN wiring. You just buy a short harness adpator for your particular brand/model head unit (around $20).
No head unit I could find would support the factory wheel buttons but an interface unit is available. This unit works with most aftermarket radios with infrared remote controls. You connect this box to the wheelbutton wiring at one end and place the IR led at the other end where its beam shines on the radio's IR reciever (i.e. in the centre overhead console). The radio's remote control is used to program the interface box to send commands by IR when wheel buttons are pressed.
This is the unit I used, the site has specific instructions for the D2 and head unit compatability.

I can add another vote for the ebay boots - I had a set for my D1 and they fitted pretty well, and only took a few minutes to install. Look much better than the scabby old ones that were there.

Hey all, what a cracking day in Melbourne! Sunny and 29! (Although it will probably all change in a mater of minutes, being Melbourne)

So I picked up the D2 yesterday and it's a great machine so far. I didn't bother checking when I purchased it, but it has ACE, which is a nice surprise and certainly works very well around the bends.
It needs a few fluids topped up and a few other bits and pieces repaired, but it seems to be a good solid base to start with.
As well as that, the missus loves it.

I've picked up a vinyl spare wheel cover from Autobarn for $27. Fits very well and saved a whole lot of searching around for an OEM one.

I've also ordered the new gear and handbrake boot from the UK. Hopefully it arrives soon.

Now, onto the keys.... Stupid me didn't check whether there were two keys with the car.
It's got a standard key that has been cut from the original, seperated from the FOB.

I've done some searching and found that new blank keys plus a new FOB can be bought online for around $80 a pop. This seems to be cheaper than what a LR dealer would charge me.
IF I were to purchase these keys and FOB's, it seems that I need to be aware of the frequency of the remote. Correct me if I'm wrong, but 99-01 D2's run at 315hz, 01-01 run at 400 and 03-04 at 700 or something like that?
Is there any way to find this out by looking at the FOB internals, or is this all dealer related stuff.
Obviously once I get the keys, I'll need to get them reprogrammed. I don't have access to a nancom or anything like that, so it's looking like I'll need to get a dealer to do it.... Is this all correct?

I'm located in the western suburbs of Melbourne and have heard of a guy in Brooklyn that can perform these tasks. Does anyone have any further info on this?
