I will just add three observations. The first is that in an offset crash only one chassis rail takes the majority of the force.. A good solid bar has the tendency to spread that force in part to the other rail which must assist crash protection. Secondly on Discoweb there are plenty of crash photos and stories and it seems to take an horrendously savage frontal impact to set off the air bags in the d2. Third the seat belt pretensions are worth there weight in gold. I used to crank up the old belts nice and tight. The pre-tensioner do the same job in an accident on the inertia reels which helps with controlled deceleration of the body.
Cheers
