    Auto rebuild in Brisbane

    Hi All

Am finally biting the bullet and getting my auto fixed. Symptoms are:

    1. Slow to engage gear when cold
    2. Loses gear/drive temporarily if you change from D to R
    3. Under neutralacceleration (coasting) it will sometimes disengage. Change to 3rd and wait 10 secs and hope it comes back.
    4. Coasting/braking up a hill near home to a red light in D will cause loss of gear. Embarassing at change to green. Fixed by shifting to 1 for 30 odd seconds and ignoring beeping of horns
    5. Occassionally it will change to 4th and jump back to 3rd and then stay in 3rd regardless of speed (80kph+) no S & M flashing. Will return to normal when you stop and the box goes back to at least 2nd.

Am I right thinking it is time for a rebuild?
Am I ok in taking it to my local Auto Trans specialist (any suggestions for Wynnum area?) or should I be taking the drive to MR Automotive?

    Thanks

Thought I'd post a good news resolution. Just did the 2nd oil change on the auto (1st one with new filter etc 500km earlier) and all problems previously mentioned are gone.

It seems driving around with underfilled burnt oil isn't the optimum state for the ZF auto. Now if only the mechanic & the supposed auto specialist that looked at the car when symptons commenced had thought to do the same.

I know that at 170K kms the box is probably due some work but if I get another 25k kms out of it I will be very happy.

Thanks for this - my box in the '02 D2a is doing both 1 & 2 with 110k on the clock.
Looks like I should give the box a service / preventative maintenance and hopefully the symptoms will disappear. Any tips?

Don't you hate it when the experts don't know to try the simple things first!!!

    Cheers

If you have auto problems and or your auto fluid changeover is long overdue (say 2 years/35K) a flush using a couple of quick fluid changes seperated by a few hundred K of driving can do wonders (as DiscoCam did) or even instantly if problem is more severe (as a DIY pumping through 10 -20 litres of fluid with engine running/tranny cooler lines disconnected).

Because ZF don't answer you back when you email them!

    Dissapointing.

Gee - apart form servicing and given some reasonable driving care I would have thought that at that mileage the ZF would have heaps of life left in it. I can think of quite a few V8 RR Classics running around quite happily on their 250,000Km to over 300,000Km original ZFs and with only regular servicing [fluid and filter c/o]under their belts.

I really hope so. I think the vehicle did some hard towing of horses in its previous life (judging by the feed I have found under every trim panel) so I'll plan for the worst and be pleasantly surprised.

Everything you need to know about the service can be found here: http://www.discovery2.co.uk/ site seems to be down so I can't give the exact page.

Buy yourself a filter kit from ebay or elsewhere and some ATF. I tried searching to find what the popular choice of fluid was but couldn't find much. The manual says Dex2 but I ended up with Dex3.

    Mistakes I made were:
    - didn't have the motor running the first time I refilled
    - didn't buy 2 lots of the same fluid the first time and assumed store would have more stock when I needed second
    - dropped filler plug in old oil and had wife turn car off whilst I found it. This makes you appreciate how much more fluid goes in when the motor is running
    - didn't do this post and develop confidence to give it a go earlier.

    Thanks

    Cameron

    Use Penrite ATF !!!

    you will see huge results!!!

My D2 was on the 200,000km mark and the auto was playing up...

new filter and Penrite ATF 3 times in 5000km intervals the auto is back to being like it was...

now im on 240,000km mark and its going strong (fingers crossed)

though i try to change the oil every 10,000 - 15,000 km...
