    Rocker cover breathers

Hi all, specifically 4L V8 owners, I've checked the breather hoses & on the drivers side hose found this inside the hose?
Is it supposed to be there to restrict airflow & prevent oil entering the manifold or not at all?
I've cleaned it up & replaced it as beforehand, almost no air was able to get through.
    Cheers in advance

There is a similar mesh filter in my 3.9. Does require cleaning every now and then.

Thanks bigjon, I've spoken to another fella who has a 3.9 & he said the same.

I've re-routed the breathers, plus the crank case breather I fitted when building the engine to an external catch can and routed the outlet of this back to one of the original inlets on the inlet manifold.

Two reasons, if (when) you blow a head gasket and it goes between oil and water galleries the sump will fill up with water and emulsify. There is enough volume & pressure the pump the liquid out the breathers and fill up the inlet manifold. Also it will probably run down the plastic pipe back towards the MAF and kill it.

The can will capture any blow by & vapor condensing it so you will need to drain on occasion.

Clubagreenie is it possible to get a photo of your setup?
Sounds like quite a good idea & I'd like to do same just for peace of mind.

While I've welded screw on fittings onto the covers it isn't necessary. I just had the fittings and prefer to use them. I'll get some pics on the weekend. I got the can from supercheap or the like for around $50- and also welded fittings onto it but it comes with assorted screw in barbed fittings, only 2, that's all you'll need unless you fit a crankcase breather. But that's an engine out job.

Post pics on sat for you.

DiscoB... I checked out mine today, after looking at your posts about this, and mine was cactus too. You might want to check that your part is complete as mine was broken in 3 places and the replacement part is much larger than the picture you've posted. All up there should be 5 ridges on the part pictured above, not 3.

On top of that, the part that screws into the MAF on the other end of the breather hose snapped clean off. I guess the plastic parts become brittle over the years from the heat of the engine and fail.
