auto trans slipping
hey all just had my auto 04 td5 serviced 170k, drove home from the dealer no dramas.left for work in the morn with a slipping trans mostly when accelerating out of corners, took car back to dealer after weekend, they checked all fluid levels they were ok but the trans logged a fault code po721 "down shift saftey monitoring". the dealer claims this is an internal fault in the transmission and have pretty much hand balled me to an auto trans speacialist. was wondering if any one had ever come accross this and what the problem and method of fixing is just so i have an idea of what i might be up for?also trans has since become stuck in third on freeway, but once pulled over switched off goes back to driving like normal. maybe another electrical problem????
cheers guys

I think maybe sticking in 3rd means it's going into limp home mode?

May just be a faulty XYZ switch, if the box cannot determine which gear its in, it will go to limp mode to "protect" itself.

Slipping does not sound real good. ? clutch pack. Getting stuck in second (not third), is limp home mode and the cog light flashing on your dash, this is the computer not knowing what is going on and that can be the switch as said. My one did a bit of what your one is up to prior to it needing a transplant. Look at other threads but if worst comes to worst then your best bet is a reconditioned swap from ZF in sydney. I put up with a bit of slipping for about 12 months prior to doing the swap so if yours is the clutch packs then it can wait a bit. Hope it is nothing but does not sound good to me.

Unsure if it'll relate to a TD5 but in the V8 I have a MAF sensor fault and when the ECU goes into open loop mode it prevents the auto shifting into 4th by just releasing the pressure on the valves. Seems for all the world like its slipping to the point where I took it to 3 auto specialists to confirm and spent 3K on a rebuild only to still have the same issue before spending $200- on a new MAF. Also occurred in lower gears but not to the same extent, and was only after fitting a scan gauge (post head gaskets and engine replacement) that I could see the faults and live driving diagnosing plus advice/reading here led me to the MAF (which had filled with oily water/watery oil) when it blew the gaskets.
Sorry to rant but wouldn't want anyone else to have to pay out 15 times the cost of the actual fault for no result. Also what area are you in? Someone might be able to recommend a good local tranny (gearbox that is) specialist.

Do you know what kind of oil that they are putting in ur Auto box?
this might be a long shot but if i was you i would try flush the auto with new Penrite ATF auto gear box oil... just spoke to a mechanic today and he says that this oil is amazing with ZF boxes...
I had problems with my gear box until I started to use PENRITE ATF oil
$100 worth of oil from auto barn and a new filter you can do it ur self...

If they have put in the wrong oil for the box in it, it can destroy it in no time at all. Certain trannies need certain oil, not only to make the clutch plates work and wear properly, but it will also help protect the gears and bearings better. To see if your plates are burning ( slipping ) smell the oil, it doesn't take long to start smelling burnt, even if it's still the right colour,,,

Actually I can vouch for the Penrite SIN ATF since I had it rebuilt. It shifts firm but without any harshness at all.
