hi all,
dropped the diff oils recently and both plugs had simalar to below
like a grease texture which wiped off, admit have not changed the oils for a bit.
thoughts, comments as to whether an oh cr@p moment coming appreciated.

This kind of fuzz or fur will always accumulate as the metal parts gradually wear. The magnet in the plug is doing its job and keeping it out of the oil. It seems to be normal amount.
I would only worry if there is big lumpy bits in it or the oil change interval was short.

Diff gears wear during their life. Hypoid diffs such as the salisbury moreso. Was that a rover or a sals?
Probably nothing to worry about (as long as it isn't bearings) - but I would be changing to a better oil - and changing it more frequently.

standard disco2 so rover diff would think, this is after 30,000km.
using 75W-90 Smooth Shift Manual Gearbox and Transaxle Oil - Nulon Products Australia in the diffs and was about to try in the gearbox aswell.

As others have said, looks normal for a fair time between changes & if both plugs look similar. Just been there. A whine got me to drain my front @ 120k and found, despite regular changes, heaps of gunk on the plug & in bottom of diff. Replacement crown & pinion on the way. No explanation, and the rear was perfect. Water contamination was ruled out. Repairer said it may have been slightly "out" from the factory and this just caught up with it eventually.

Rick130 is the oil expert, but I wouldn't personally use that in a diff. It sounds like it will be too light. - which may be your problem. I would choose a good quality 80W90 diff oil.Originally Posted by Yorkie

Mobil Agri something or other I believe he suggested, duffs & transfer case too. I'm running Penrite 80W90 atm in my transfer case because I couldn't get hold of the Mobil product but I'm gone do my diffs soon so I shall try a bit harder to get the mobil one & let u guys know where to get it from

Yorkie, I had the same on my plugs. I've had mine since new and changed out the diff oil at 30000k's. Wiped them clean and at 55000k's there was next to no crud on the plugs. Maybe it is a production problem and contaminants are there from the start or maybe it is just the componants wearing in. Either way I would not be too concerned. Just change oil every 40K.

I changed mine at 20k,rear was exactly as yours in pic,my front had about half as much.The rear oil also smelt burnt.Had car since new,done 80k
First time i had changed mine myself as was just out of extended warranty.I took a sample of the oil to MR auto(LR specialists),& they said there were no big bits of metal in it,they thought it was OK,just keep an eye on it.I had done about 10k of fast country running,fully loaded,a lot of dirt roads,on the oil,the rest of the time was around town driving,so maybe this helped it get a burnt smell.The rear always works harder than the front.
I changed the rear again at 2k later & found it to be fine.Will moniter,& drain at 10k for a check.
If using mineral oil,i recon it has to be changed at 20k,max.If you use the synthetic oil,such as syntrax,you can probably go longer.This also depends on what type of conditions you are driving in.
