I can vouch for the length being too long without bump stops. They come with a rubber ring on the shaft. I would push the rubber ring up to the top of the shaft and then after a few decent bumps, the rubber ring would sit maybe a mm or so of the bottom of the shaft. The ring is pretty tight and not likely to move with out the shock body sliding it down. My rears end up about 50mm from the bottom.
I was running a 25mm bump stop extender in the front but not I have taller towers and standard bump stops in the front. My flex remains the same as the taller towers mean I have lost down travel from ride height but gained space between the diff housing and the bump stops. Prior to getting the taller towers my extended bump stops showed signs of frequent contact with the diff housing. I wouldn't say hard contact but the rubber was dark toward the tip and still dusty toward the chassis.
My rears hardly ever, if ever bottom out. My problem with the rear is the extension. I'm considering changing the valves as they are only pretty cheap, $15/pair if I recall. I am happy with the bound dampening but I'd like a higher rebound dampening. I currently have 360/80 front and rear. I'd like 400/80 in the rear and 360/100 in the front.
I'm also considering adding white tiger mount adapters for the rear so I can use all the travel. The risk for me in the rear is I'm worried about how long the bags can extend? Since I have the lifting blocks in the rear, I'd added the extended bump stops as I'd been told the internals of the bags could bottom out before the stop and destroy itself. I've been told this is not the case but since I don't bottom out in the rear, I'm not worried about removing the extended stops.
Prior to adding the Prothane bushes, the Rears would top out with a pretty loud thump but since adding the poly bushes, I haven't noticed it.
Happy Days.
You don't need the extended bumps stops on the rear. I have run without them for ever and bottomed out plenty of times without damage.
I would not go much more than a 615mm extended shock length for the rear.
You may be able to go 5 or 10mm longer but that is it. I speak from experience. I tried running with a 25mm spacer under airbag but still had the 995 shocks (615mm extended) and I ripped the airbag apart. :(
But I am going to be trying a new Boss airbag. They now make them to fit D2 and apparently you can run them at a 2" lift without a 50mm spacer.
So hypothetically if you did install the spacer you could run a shock with a 665mm extended length
Here is how much of my front shocks get used with Britpart towers.

And the rears. You see why I want the white tiger extensions.

What size shock do you have in the rear and front?
Also, can someone point me to a link on ? shocks site where you can buy the nylon bushes. It sounds like they are a better option than the rose joints so I might as well change them now rather than having to pull it apart later
10 inch short bodies all round.
I think going 12 inch short bodies in the rear would have been the go with the valving I mentioned in my previous post.
I think I got mine through Eshock. They had to order them in for me. Sorry you didn't know as you could of got them at the same time you order the shocks.
My rose joints weren't worn at all but they do clonk at the end of the extension with the air bags. The poly bushes are marginally (maybe it's in my head) quieter.
Happy Days.
Oh and the oil looking stuff on my rear shocks aren't leaking shocks. It's from my leaking diesel regulator. (I'm fixing it).
Happy Days
No. It's all good. I haven't ordered shocks yet so I can get bushes together. I just can't find them on website.
I will have to get 10" short body all round too because any longer and it will tear airbags apart. If I had springs I would go 12".
I'm also having trouble with RTE. They never answer emails. I just need a freight cost for the lower shock mounts.
