Recommended on-road tyre for 18 inch rims?

I know there has been a couple of threads discussing tyres for 18s, but most of the discussion was centred around all terrain tyres.

I have a set of 265 75 R16 mud terrains for the bush, so I need a good set of tyres that will spend most of their life on bitumen. I currently have the standard Wranglers which seem to wander a tramline a bit, so hoping for something that will handle a little better but still have a long life.

So far my ringing around has found a long list of choices:

    Maxxis MAS 2 $259
    Kumho KL51 $260
    Maxxis HP600 $300
    Hankook RA06 $329
    Yokohama V-802 $330
    Toyo Proxes AT2 $330
    Bridgestone D680 $340
    Hankook RH07 $350
    Cooper Zeon XSTA $350
    Dunlop PT2 $394
    BF Goodridge Macadam $400
    Goddyear Wrangler $420
    Michellin XL-Lattitude $450
    Pirelli XL SC-STR $470

I would prefer to not have to spend more than $400.

I would like to hear peoples experiences with any of the tyres above or others and any recommendations you might have.
My vehicle is a D2a V8 with SLS, ACE and soon to have a 50mm lift.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Russ

My current D2 is running Coper XSTA..., and although done limited Ks, they seem quiet comfortable and servicable...On my previous D3, I ran a set of Cooper HT plus, and they were very good. Not sure what they cost, but if they're less than XSTas, I'd buy them.

My similar D2a has Goodyear wrangler Hp's and is excessivly twitchy,, trams would not stay on these rails!

I dont think I'll be paying 420 for another set---

mind you,, it does go round corners well

    Talking Tyres

Bought the bridgstones myself--great on tarmac, dirt and have even had them off road[limited] mainly because they were AUSSIE made, and I shopped around for the best price[they had a jaks quick fit in Cairns that beat all ather places hands down.

I ran a set of Yokohama Advan V802's for 40k's odd. Really good, really quiet compared to the Wranglers I had on previously but wore a little fast for my liking.(they are a very soft compound). I got them for $300 each fitted and balanced but they may cost more now?

They hang on really well in the wet though !!

I have the Michelin Latitude Cross in that size on my D2a. Fantastic tyres. They are great in the wet and they are lasting well. They can handle a bit of light dirt work if you don't want to swap your rims also.

I run the Michelin Latitude Tour HP on my D1 16" road rims. Also great road tyres. A mate has the same size and has got 80k out of them. Pushes them hard too. I'm pretty sure they come in 255/55 18.

Not sure if you can get them for 18's - but I'm running GT Radials with a highway pattern on them on the original 16x8 rims on mine. They were very reasonably priced, and a far better ride than the Michelins that were fitted previously.

My boss has Cooper Zeon's on 17's on his D3 and so far, he's very happy with them.

I'm a bit wary of Coopers though - I have seen how bad their A/T tyres are in harsh rocky terrain where I'm working at the moment (Nullagine). Our client had them on all their vehicles and have now changed brands after averaging only 11,000km out of the Coopers. I saw a pair come off the back of a 100 series last week - totally stuffed at 5,000k's. I've got Bridgestone Duelers on my work Prado at the moment - not good either but better than the Coopers. We've just got in some Hankooks to try - very chunky tread, much like the Cooper STT - but a lot cheaper. Will be interesting to see how they go.

On my D1 V8 I was running Kelly ATR's - was very happy with them.
    Cheers .........

I've got a set of Hankook Ventus ST in 255/55/18 as road tyres. They seem quite good. They haven't been on for long (4 months) but there is no sign of wear yet. They do tram track a bit but I put it down to the wide rim with low profile tyres.
They retail for around $270ea (if you shop around).
