Just went to replace stop light bulb on left tailight...and, wow, there's a little dusty filter thing in there with a breather type tube rising up above it? Who knew? All of you probably, but not me!
Can someone tell me what this is, please?
Its part of the LR service schedule to replace this filter at certain intervals, would have to check to see what they were but its pretty long intervals (unless you have lots of dusty conditions). Have replaced mine once, simple job & the genuine filter wasn't expensive.

I threw the whole filter assembly away (foam filter had fallen apart).
Rerouted the intake into the cabin behind the trim in the cargo area and put on a $14 air filter from Autobarn. Should stay nice and dry and clean there and 'maybe' extend the life of the new compressor.
Your rear diff breather is also there. I fitted a small inline filter to this to prevent dust ingress. I don't have SLS.

I knew there would be a good response - thanks for the info!

Very Interesting. I have so far had a service every 20,000 at the steelers, as well as this, I do my own service and oil change in between at 10,000. At no time have the steelers changed this filter. I have given it a clean and wash myself during my services and it is the same old filter in there. If I was not so lazy I would get around to re routing it into the cabin too and avoid all the dust it is presently exposed to.
Checked it. According to Haynes its to be renewed every 60000 miles so around 100,000 ks. I guess once or twice in the vehicles lifetime but looking at the dust usually in there a clean or change more often is probably a good idea.
