    Air springs or Coil ?

    Hi all,

I have just bought a 2004 TD5 Classic Discovery and as the rear suspension sags after about 12 hours or so ,I am wondering if its better ( cheaper and better) to replace the air spring or convert to coil.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the thought of having to rely on a compressor to operate intermittently just to keep your rear end off the pavement frightens you, then convert to coils.
If you don't mind putting in a bit of extra time ensuring that your air suspension is correctly maintained, then repair your air suspension fault, and enjoy the superior ride and handling.

    search is your friend.

    Just put new bags in.
    as cheap as new coils.
The new set will probably last another ten years.
    BUT!
    Do it now.
You dont want to buy a new compressor.

What he said.................. Although I changed to coils

in other words, the sls is defiantly worth keeping..... aaaagh with twisted nuance here, gotta add that now I'm on coils I feel less vulnerable.

hey mate ive done the compressor and both the coils and i have a 50mm spacer kit under it and i can say its worth it the rear sits about 2.5 inch over standard then up 40mm when in off road insane clearance and the gear is cheap if you know where to go , i got a pretty much new set of bags from a bloke whos compressor went so he **** canned the hole tings for 50 bucks and you can buy redone compressor form england for 500 so i reckon they are complely worth it

I think its worth mentioning that it depends on what you are using your vehicle for.

If its mainly a shopping trolly that tows the boat or van then air springs are a no brainer,

but if its mainly a play car then coils have superior articulation in the rough.

04 its probably too young to be a basher :P

Mine was doing the same thing and it progressively got worse. Every now and then I would go out in the morning and she would be sitting on the bump stops then it started doing it every time I turned the car off after about 3 hours. Discovered the spray soapy water trick from searching the forum and sure enough the drivers side bag was bubbling. Ordered some bags from brit parts in the uk, $320 landed to my doorstep in 5 working days, orginal parts. They didn't say land rover on them but they were the same brand.

Replacement took about 2 hours and I am an amatuer.

I can't see spings being cheaper than that.

4 Dobinsons coils for $350. 2 for $200 ish. As 'The Kid' said, whats the car going to get up to?

    cheers

I also have done the conversion to coils, most likely because I haven't had a great deal of luck with machinery lately & I just wanted to be able to take my boys camping & not have to worry. I've found the ride is still comfy enough that the GLW doesn't complain so...
Note to self though, I've kept all my sls parts on the car so that if, for whatever reason I decide to revert to bags, I can. If u don't want the annoying light on your dash, find someone who will hook it up to a computer & tell it that it's on coils not bags then off u go

My 04 td5 has done 120ks & have replaced the bags once. Look at them as consumeable rubber items like tyres. Off road I like to be able to give my std. height rear a 40mm lift by pushing a button, the ecu will lift it even higher if it detects your stuck. Good points outweigh the bad and worth keeping IMHO.
If compressor failure is a worry you can put in emergency inflation kits for under $100
    Cheers Discolaw
