Purchasing td5 with 3 amigos and harsh vibrations

    Hi,

I have come to the decision of buying an auto td5 for towing purposes. Today I test drove 1999 series 2 with 220,000 kms that had the 3 amigos on and very harsh vibration at 2200 rpm. The vibration was only at slight throttle load though. Full throttle seemed to make most of It go away and any rpm either side was very smooth. After 110 klms hr it was hardly noticeable even at low throttle load.
When the vibration was there it was quite audible as well. My missus was sitting in the passenger side and said to me during the test drive what the hell is that? Referring to the vibration and harmonic noise.
I have searched and searched for more info on this site and on the net but couldn't find any info on when or how this common problem happens ie. During light throttle at 2200 rpm versus what repairs fixed the problem.
The disco has great service history always done at a disco dealership and the vehicle is quite cheap. I'm also a mechanic so repairing the car isn't a concern to me, it just seems that some people never fix the vibration problem which concerns me a little.
Any info or ideas will be very appreciated. Thanx in advance.
    Michael.

TD5s have been noted to have a vibration at the revs you speak of. Have a look at this thread. I suggest you check your engine mounts, harmonic balancer and the flexplate. After that there are the drive line rotating bits like handbrake, propshafts etc, although if rpm specific and happens in all gears I'd stick with the engine related components.

Three amigos can easily go away but if you have an ABS failure it could be a bit more of an issue to repair. There are threads on here that show how to do some common repairs inside the ABS module.

The early TD5s are not easily remapped as they do not have an electrically eraseable PROM.

    Good luck

I'd just keep looking, why buy something you know has a problem? There are plenty out there especially as it seems you aren't hunting for the unachievable "less than 100k" car.
BTW I drive a D2a with 245k on the clock and apart from the usual niggles, it's fine.

    Agree.

The only benefit to pursuing this vehicle might be that you get it cheap enough to make repairs and your time and effort worthwhile.
    IE dirt cheap.

I have a general rule of thumb that if I am buying car I allow for $500 on top of all known expenses and $1000 for a 4WD. To allow for any hidden/unexpected problem.

If the vehicle doesnt look like a fair buy with that included I walk away.

    cheers

    Thanx guys,

I drive a 2010 navara full time but its manual and my partner hates towing the horse float with it. The disco is just being used as a tow car. I could probably buy the car for $7500. Even with the problems it has i think its alot of car for the money. I run a workshop so repairs are no problem. I actually dont mind a challenge.
I never tried reving the engine in neutral to isolate drive train from engine so the vibration is still very uncertain as to what it could be. I was very surprised how good they are to drive for a vehicle of its age.
If anyone thinks $7500 is way too much please dont hesitate to tell me. Your info will be appreciated.
Hi Strangy, Im allowing a couple of grand spend on this one. Im struggling to find any others for sale that are as clean as this one for $10k.

    Thanx again Michael.

I agree with strangy on this one BUT in the case of a TD5'd D2 of that age I strongly suggest that you budget $3K for your repair factor.

Ive just done the cooling system hoses only (the age/Ks of yours suggest that it should be due for its second set of hoses) and brakes on my sisters td5d2 and blown $2.2K in parts/consumbles alone AND it has no vibration issue. (3 amigos on her car appears to be fixed with the new pads/rotors)

If you dont mind a challange its worth it but have a close look at how it all fits together and decide how much of a challange you like.

Glad to hear a Nissan owner agreeing about how nice D2's are to drive.
We drive to Brisbane at least twice a year towing the camper and we just relax and enjoy the ride, little if any fatigue and the seats are just soooo good.

Is it a vibration or a loud rattle at 2200rpm???.
Older Discos including my 99 have a rattle in the handbrake, my wifes 2003 discos does not.
The check is to see if you get the noise you mention with the handbrake pulled on a bit or it goes away at that rev range. There is a kit offered which is basically a spring kit to hold the handbrake shoes up against the backing plate firmer and stop the rattle.
I got mine done however I still get a bit of a rattle at the 2200rpm range but nothing like it was (you could hear it coming a street away). I find if I very precisely adjust the handbrake I can make it almost silent. Hope this helps.

Hi waddy. I honestly think the disco rides better than my navara.

Big o, the noise is quite loud but it isn't so much a rattle. It vibrates a lot and has harmonics to go with it. It's more of an annoying rumble through the cabin. Only as I accelerate lightly, just bringing the eng on boost. It has good power. The eng isn't missing.
