Thread: CDL warning sound ?

I am not aware of any CDL related chimes. Especially not in our series cars that never had a CDL as standard. You will get chimes from the HDC system e.g.turning it off or if you push the button in when in high ratio or going faster than 50kph.

Just found this in Rave:

Brake overheat prevention
To prevent the brakes overheating, the SLABS ECU monitors the amount of active braking employed and, from this,
estimates brake temperature. If the SLABS ECU estimates the brake temperature has exceeded a preset limit, it
flashes the HDC fault warning lamp and sounds the audible warning continuously, to indicate that HDC should be
deselected to allow the brakes to cool. If active braking continues and the SLABS ECU estimates that brake
temperature has increased to an unacceptable level, fade out is employed and HDC is disabled...

Learnt something new as well.

One other question too - I have 2" dobinson springs and shocks all round with 265/75/16 Mickey Thompson MTZs which performed brilliantly. But the rear sagged very noticably when loaded with the camping gear. What is the best fix - is it possible to go to a 3" lift in the rear and leave the 2" in the front ? or do I need heavier gauge springs and leave it at 2" ? Can I install air bags inside the existing springs ??

I am a 1st time poster after reading this site avidly to learn as much as I can about my Landy. I must say I am stoked with the Disco and blown away at the capability off road. I also have an 07 SR5 hilux which is now relegated to the SWMBO shopping trolley. Cheers

How old are the springs and shocks.... what spring rating did you go for... How much kit have been carrying to notice the sag.... Number of occupants, Have you got steel rear bar/long range tanks/cargo drawer system/fridge....Is it only when you are off roading that you have noticed a sagging back end...

Is the ride comfortable... is the sag actually causing issue other than visual... A much firmer spring may hold the back end up but may not give the comfort over 'big terrain'...

is there a big difference in the trucks height when empty compared to full... measure on a flat concrete drive... or similar to gauge difference..

Keep it springs don't go airbag helpers... those who had the later airbags generally come back to springs so keep it simple...

My D2a chimes 3 times when I engacdl and then again when I disengage it. This I think is normal, just a reminder that it's in or out.
Haven't heard of the problem of continous chiming though sorry.
Very interesting info re the high temp warning.

I have had my 04 TD5 manual D2a since new and have never used the HDC. Never needed to, Low range second always low enough. Curious though.

HDC is pretty handy on the Auto V8.
I only use it in low 1st though.
The extra compression from the diesel obviously counts for a lot when it comes to engine braking.

Hmmm... low 2nd ain't gunna do it in an auto though, not without lots of brakes.... not ideal on a wet, steep downhill. I might even get tempted by HDC in that case...... NAH, it lets the car go too fast esp if there is any wheel lifting involved

I hsve not heard of the CDL having any warning chimes ( Could do though)
Hill Desent will chime 3 times when activated and 3 eimes when you hit the brake or deactivate.
Your ABS and Traction control inc HDC can / will chime if there are faults. You will get the well known 3 lights on the dash also. These can go away also, but they can re appear and not go away . This pain is nick named " The 3 amigos". Look up "the good oil" on the forum and do a search for all the info.
Soft springs are great for off rd, you can put poly airs in to help with your loaded hight if wanted. All depends on your needs.

You can change your diff ratios and Tc ratio but, I dont think it is a good move with your tyre sizes atm, Plenty of better mods to do before then

The CDL chimes when engaged and again when disengaged but as mentioned it eventually began to chime almost consistently, and it was definitely associated to the CDL, not TC or HDC as it stopped the minute CDL was turned off. HDC chimed too when activated but that was easily recognised as CDL was switched off and only used for downhill. Yes, it is an auto and 1st low was not low enough. Some of the tracks we went on had up to 20 switchbacks and were as steep as anything I have ever seen. We saw motorbike tracks that turned around rather than climb one of the tracks.
I cant see the chimes were a brake overheating issue as it was going uphill and no braking being applied. so I am still a bit lost as to why I had the warning chimes on CDL uphill.
Re the suspension - all shocks and springs are 3 months old. Rear springs selected are mid strength, ie not soft but not stiff either. 2 people in vehicle, fridge, clothes, food etc. 6th wheel on roof rack plus 1 jerry. Most of the heavy items were in my sons hilux. The springs sagged noticably and once unloaded they returned to the 2" lift levels again. Is it possible to run different lifts front to back ? I have not heard of this before but it might help as I bottomed the back end out on a few river entry / exits
