    Steering Noise

There's a low rumble/wurring noise when I steer at low speeds, when parking etc. Is this anything to worry about, read something online about welding "front frame spacer bolts"? However my disco is a 99 td5 S model & the article below refers to all LT models

It's quite possibly the same but that bulletin fixes what is normally a creaking noise at parking speeds.

Mine makes this noise too... If the car is stationary and the wheel is turned, it makes the noise. I'd say it's the pump working overtime due to all of the resistance.
I try to counteract it a bit by having the car moving a little whenever I'm turning the wheel, the rolling of the wheels decreases load on the pump and removes the noise.

So, a fix... Check all of your steering bushes and arms for signs of wear. Check your belts are in good shape and tight. Finally, a reco of the pump or a new one.

Hope that leads you down the right path.

Mine as well, and a mate has the td5, his too, apparently Sully you're right on the money, i've heard plenty of LR's doing it in the carpark outside my shop, check everything involved, imho, be confident it's just another LR perk and ignore unless it changes (gets louder, happens more often etc)
i think i've noticed mine doing it more so when cold?

Spot on DB... I've noticed mine happens more often when cold too.

It's one of those things that I recognised straight away from many cars over the years and have learnt to "drive around the problem".
I'm sure it can be fixed, but I won't worry about it until the pump actually stops performing properly.

I kind of like the whir of the steering pump and the ACE when turning corners slow or fast. It reminds me that everything is working. I'll worry when the disco stops making noises.

Have you ever bothered to change the fluid. If you have ACE on your car you only have half the fluid capacity for steering doing just as much work. New fluid does wonders.

Is that right? The fluid reservoir in a non ACE disco is larger than one with ACE?

I was not aware of this. Thanks.

They use the same basic bottle/tank for ACE and Non ACE, but ACE bottles are divided in two halves, ACE fluid one side, PAS fluid the other side two filler caps. Same size bottle/tank just half each.
