Thread: Retro fitting power mirrors?

Thumbs up Retro fitting power mirrors?

    Hi all,

I have a 2002 Discovery S. The door mirrors are manually adjustable and there is no power mirror switch on the right of the steering wheel - just a blank panel where it would normally be. Does anyone know whether a switch can be retro installed (i.e. are the mirrors already wired)?

Also, the steering wheel has no volume controls or cruise control buttons. I am pretty sure these can be retro-installed pretty easily. Can anyone confirm?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    cheers
    Blake

The cruise control is ready to go when you fit the switches (if you have a Td5). Not too sure on the radio though (I doubt it though as it's just a Eurovox radio).

The mirrors are manual, not electric (different parts so will not have any electric internals). The wiring for them could well be in the car though.

Thanks Scott. That answers it then.

I pulled the cheater panels off and saw there is no wire coming out of the mirrors. Looks like the wiring is in the door though so if electric mirrors were installed they should plug straight in.

Most td5's are pre wired, you can even add power folds as well.

To the standard electric mirrors or do you need to get different folding mirrors? This is one thing I do miss from Jap cars.

No mate they dont fold. They do seem to last. My 95 model is still going well both sides (touch wood). My 02 D2 does not have them either. They are so big though that it has never been an issue for me in the 02.

    Cheers

The mirrors & cruise control are 2 different items & are just plug & play no matter which way you go.

The mirrors, there are 3 different types.
    No electrically powered, manual movement.
    Electrically powered/heated, controlled from switch.
    Electrically powered/heated/folding, controlled from switch.
The mirrors will just bolt up as they are all the same shape, just make sure you use all the hardware as if you buy 2nd hand versions not all the brackets can turn up & you may have to use what you already have.

There are 2 types of switches which fit into the dash on the far R/H/S.
One switch does moves the mirrors left/right/up/down
The other does the same but has the function to fold the mirrors when in the centre position & you pull the toggle down.
Again this is just plug & play, from memory there are 2 plugs hidden behind the dash, one for power fold & one not, its just a matter of fitting the correct plug.

The folding mirrors will need to have the ECU fitted to the vehicle & wiring run from the bottom of the "A" pillar inside the vehicle to the plug at the top of the door casing where the plugs are located.
I did this to my D2 & was pretty easy.

Cruise control is just plug/play, i have never had to actually turn in on in the BCU for it to operate. Just make sure you get the steel plate that bolts the switch to the steering wheel & also the screws they are an essential part.

The volume controls for the steering wheel will NOT work as the stereo system is a Eurovox unit which was fitted when the vehicle arrived & does not have the connections for it to operate.

    Cheers & goodluck.

God what am I doing! I bought a base model discovery to back in 2002 which has been very reliable mainly due to the absence of electronic gizmos - you know coils springs, no ACE, no electric seats no electric mirrors, but now my seat bases are worn and I've just committed to putting in electrically operated and heated black leather seats into the front (albeit they have only done 15,000 km) and I am seriously considering getting the electric or electric/folding mirrors that came from the same HSE. Do I take it that powering up electric mirrors is easy, but there is more involved in having them operate as folding electric mirrors, namely to buy and ECU module simply for the mirrors themselves? I'm not sure where the wiring harness is that Sneigy is talking about above but presumably it's inside the trim on the a pillar moulding?

    Many thanks
