Thread: Steering wheel wobble at 80km'h

Probably an unevenly made tyre carcass. Try swapping front to rear, one side at a time. I had one like this, only solved by chucking the tyre.

It could be a tyre problem.

But, it could also be more than wheels needing balancing or steering dampers. It could be tired shocks, worn suspension bushes, toe out of alignment, slack in the power steering unit...

Whatever the issue, It will only happen at that speed as the vibrations of the vehicle hit a certain frequency, causing the steering wobble.

Mine had a noticeable shake at 80 and now only has a very slight one after the sway bar bushes were replaced and a general tighten up of the front end. It's still not perfect, but not enough of an issue for me to worry.

Go to a reputable suspension place, get a 4 wheel alignment, (read wheel alignment, not wheel balance as you've done this already) check toe and camber and check all bushes and all shocks.
Road test and go from there.

I'm thinking it's not the shocks they are failry new Bilsteins (about 2-3 years?) and there's no obvious indication the shocks are going at any other time. It's the wifes car and it does nothing but day trips on tarmac and take her to work.

All started to happen after we renewed the tyres late last year and went from 235 to 245 but skimped a bit and got Maxxis bravo AT the one I have found has now been discontinued from production. So probably tyre? but I've had thought they would have identified the bad one when they balanced on one of the two occasions.

A wheel alignment allround sounds like my right to.

I have this exact same problem at 80km to about 90km then goes away. I have Cooper somethings that came with the car.

Going to have a wheel alignment and start there.

Check your front prop shaft. I had speed wobbles at 80 km/hr. Only symptom for me. Have a good look though. In neutral so you can spin it around. Dont' forget the wheel chocks.

meh i have that, i just speed up till it goes away lol

Both our D2's do it,, both have rebuilt Hardy Spicer front prop shaft s greased every service and both only 40000km on them. I thinking rear shaft ..maybe the bush not the donuts ..both of them are only new too.
Can transfer case mounts cause it. I notice its pretty easy to move the TC around.not loose though.

Dont kow about D2,s. But with series and D1,s its often swivel housing preload.
