Can the coil packs be relocated or is there an easy way to access them?
Just from looking to the back of the motor from the side they look like you cant reach in there. I have a lead change planned in the future.

They are an absolute pain to do, however if you have nimble fingers you will win. It is important to note that you have to install the lower leads first, then the upper ones. There is JUST enough room to get them on that way. Unclip the wiring loom that runs along the back of the firewall. As for easier access, removing the top half of the manifold will expose them more. If I am doing a LPG injection conversion the leads are done with the top off. I haven't looked at shifting the coils, where would they go? The D2 engine bay is full.

I'm randomly looking at doing this.MSD make plugs that will fit the harness (male) and also the coil end so we can make a plug in extension for the wiring. Put one on each inner guard or better up on the panel above the current location (may need some cutting to clear metal). Will need new leads (some of the long ones may fit the rear plugs). MSD also make some smaller or different shaped coil packs.

The LS1 has a coil per cylinder mounted on the rocker cover.
How much clearance is there between the manifold and the bonnet?
Is taking the manifold off easy to do, I need to change my rocker cover gaskets. What new seals/gaskets would I need if I lifted the manifold to change the rocker cover gaskets?

Perhaps I should say no-one has offered to pay me to shift their coils.

Getting the manifold top off is OK, except for two 7mm(?) screws that hold the coil pack on to the manifold. You remove the little bolts and bend back the coil mount bracket. I reuse the centre gasket with a little 515 Loctite, there's no big risk of a vacuum leak as the gasket is a steel shim type.

Oh and make sure you have a socket to fit the rocker cover screws FIRST! I made one up when I couldn't get a 12 point 1/4 drive socket from my tool supplier. I found a cheapie 1/2 drive 8mm socket, cut and and welded it to a scrap 1/4 drive socket.

Replacing the valley gasket at the same time would be a good idea if it looks oily, sometimes the gasket material falls off all over the place.

These are probably COP's (Coil on Plug) Needs different wiring and computer setup. Might be able to do it with a piggy back or mega squirt.

The rover has only 3 wires, a power supply and 2 trigger wires. Running wasted spark so each plug fires twice (on comp tdc and ex tdc)

These are MSD part no 8239 (mitsubishi replacement) 3 flat pin connector with lead connections. Can someone confirm that the rover coils are flat connectors or round (if round then use 8229). I can get the flat connectors from a US contact but in packs of 6 at the moment (waiting to see if can be split or ordered as separate items). These are the harness end, unsure if a plug to match the coil is available to make it plug and play or would need to splice in extension wires.

As for relocating, the pass side is ok, drivers is a bit iffy but since the leads exit the sides could probably fit above the bay in the area where the air inlet for the vent/air con is. Would need to cut a little metal for this but nothing structural.

Would there be interest in a kit of plugs or ready made harness to plug in or splice in (depending on availability of male end (to use the existing coils or replacement MSD coils) leads to suit the new location, either MSD to suit their coil ends if necessary or 8 or 10mm Magnecor custom made to suit.

    Edit: https://www.msdignition.com/forum/sh...ight=discovery

A thread on a complete system recommended by them for D2.

Edit #2: The plugs are available individually and for BOTH ends so we can make an extension harness. Looking at about $63- per set of 2 males (to plug into existing harness ends) and 2 females (for the coils). Or if you wanted to cut the existing ends and splice new wires and add new female only ends about $26-.

Waiting on a response from MSD on what they think of replacing coils only (best way I could think of raising the relocation/harness extension issue with them while sounding like I might buy their coils (but actually reusing the rover).
