    D2 Rear Door Capacity

Once I eventually get new 16x10 rims and 305/70/16 tyres for the D2 I need to work out if the rear door will hold up to the extra weight.

I also have a 60 inch extreme high lift jack I wanted to mount there as well with a telescopic work light.

Any thoughts if the door hinges can take the weight?

I would dearly love to put a rear wheel carrier bar on but want a double which don't seem to be easily available.

I am not able to answer your question with any mechanical background to the door design however the D2 rear door seems to cope better than the Defender did.

It should do however if the hinges already have some 'slop', the extra weight will make it worse.

I took my wheel carrier off and turned it upside down so I could fit a larger spare - it worked fine and no problems from the hinges although I don't have a jack or any other weight on the carrier apart from the tyre.
    Cheers

What size tyre can we go upto without turning the carrier up side down?

265/75 X 16 BFG muddies (Brand new KM's that have chunkier tread than the newer KM2's) just barely fit so I flipped the carrier. Now have plenty of room.

FYI....If you flip the carrier, only 4 bolt holes will line up not the normal 6 right-way-up. Hasn't made any difference so far over rough roads and corrugations!

    Thanks everyone.

As far as tyre size on std door carrier, I have 245/75/16 muddies and they only just clear but I have re-arranged the rear bar a few times.

I wouldnt mind a new carrier swinging of the rear bar but I want one that opens with the door. Will have to see if I get that adventurous with the welder.

I've just switched to 245/75 16's and the spare almost rests on the bumper

About 31". Turning the carrier upside down will still only give you a 33" I think.
