Ashcroft CDL install, question about cable?
Hi All,
I have finally got around to installing my Ashcroft CDL lever and am part way through the install. I have a question that I'm hoping someone who has installed the kit might be able to answer. The cable that connects to the CDL nut seems to have a lot of tension on it when attempting to position the lever in its final position, I have made all my adjustments so that it engages and disengages but the cable direction from the lever puts it straight into the side of the transmission tunnel and puts a lot of strain back on the lever assembly when trying to line up. Has anyone else experienced this?
Cheers Matt

I never had the problem you speak of, mine was the oppisite, I think the cable seemed quite long, you sound as tho you have the bracket on to far around on the spigot for the CDL.
Doesnt the end have a nut it and it can be adjusted for longer or shorter cable..
I fitted mine awhile back, but it was a quick and easy job from memory

Thanks Ean for the reply, I agree that the cable is long and this is why I have so much tension, the diameter of the cable does not help either. I should have taken a photo when it was daylight, but I should be able to get all back together with some effort, it just seems strange that the cable exits the lever on the right hand side and straight into the transmission tunnel, I have watched the you tube video but it does not show the cable route. As far as I can tell I have everything setup the right way it just seems tight on the cable bend.

Hi Mate,
I installed mine and found the same thing you did also but the cable of mine was genuine and has alot of insulation. Mine has been in for a year like this and haven't had any issues i just thought it was normal.
Thanks Matt

Cheers for the reply, it probably is normal but I thought I would check before I rivet the plate back in.

Oh I miss read your post, yes mine was tight on the bend, and did lean against the tunnel, but I put it down to the only way it could rotate the spigot.
I had mine in the car for about 18mths and did not have a drama, even when offroading..
It makes the 4 bolts when mounting it abit hard to keep in alignment.
I never got a rubber gasket with mine and when I installed it you could see into the trans tunnel, so I got an old inner tube and made and fitted that to it...I was worried dust/mud would get into the centre console area..

Thanks Ean for the suggestion of sealing, I was going to use to original rubber gasket, but that would be of no use, I will look in my garage for an old tyre tube.

Hi all,
Finished install tonight and very happy with job, the only thing that slowed me down was refitting the plate that holds lever and auto shifter, this was due to tension on cable against transmission tunnel. Took disco for a test spin in the wombat state forest and was impressed with performance, hard to notice how effective the cdl is until you attempt a tricky slope with, then without cdl, what a difference. Only downside to the test drive was that I drove over a fallen tree and a small branch flicked up and pretty much ripped my rear bumper off, what a joke, of all the driving I've done out there I've never had a small stick do so much damage. The plan is now to build a steel rear bar, I've been thinking about it for ages, now I just have to do it.

I know its a bit late and you have done it, but for info or peace of mind the Genuine D2a linkage is also a fight to position the lever to bolt it back in.

Thanks urban panzer for the reply, I actually thought it might have been easier when I saw the install thread under the "good oil", I did not realise there was such a difference in design between the genuine and the ashcroft version. It looks as if the genuine cdl cable is actuated from the left side of the lever.
Cheers Matt
