On my previous D1 I carried about 20 star pickets 6' long on my roof bars. Transported these about 100kms over some pretty rough asphalt roads. Don't know the weight. But must be more than 50kgs. Probably closer to 100kgs.
IMO gas strut regassing is not that successful. The couple of dollars saved now will need to be spent on new units when the gas escapes again.

Mike, whats the rationale for this? I have factory rails, which I have extended. On these I have currently two, but soon to be 4 rhino sportz bars. I would think this spreads the load failry evenly over the 6 mounting points for the factory roof rails.
Is it still 50kgs in total? Why are the gutters any stronger than the roof rail mounting points?

I got a pod. 5 of us in the D2 going up Cape York a couple of years ago with 2 oz tents mounted either side on rhino aero bars with the heavy duty gutter mounts. Put all the light stuff in it like sleeping bags, blow up mattresses, chairs spare clothes etc. I mounted it such that I could get to it by standing on the spare tyre. It hinges at the front. I was really happy with this set up. Only once backed into a tree limb; no damage done. No dust or water got in, handled the corrugations really well.
Also have a cargo barrier and shelf so the car was loaded.
In my experience heaps better that the previous ARB roof cage and zip up bag. I would not bother with the factory rails, spend the money (if you have any after the baby) on some decent gutter mount bars. Mind you I had these prior to getting the pod.
Enjoy your trip.
