    smoky td5 after flashtune

    hey all recently had later model flashtuned ecu installed in my 00 model disco, since then car has been blowing masses of black smoke and drinking fuel. mechanic says tune has gone into dozens of discos with no complaints and said check airflow meter, coolant temp sensor, intercooler hoses, turbo and centre muffler all of which i've done as best i can to no avail???

    I'd look at the MAF, if you have access to a Nanocom you can check this, readings for it to be working correctly are;

    60 to 80 at idle

    500 to 600 at 3000rpm under load

    Also look at the AAP sensor, it's located on the side of the airbox, give it a clean with carby cleaner or MAF sensor cleaner.

    Oil in the injector loom can cause a smokey engine too.

    Delaminated intercooler hoses, they can look OK, but can still be stuffed, inspect the inside of the hoses, replace them anyway and get silicon hoses, they allow for better air flow.

    Have you wound the turbo wastegate up for more boost, it is a good idea to do this to help it breath more with the bigger chip/remap, this will also reduce smoke as will a larger intercooler and silicon hoses.

    The thing is, just getting a power upgrade with a chip or remap isn't where it stops, along with this it is recommended you upgrade your intercooler, and hoses, get an EGR bypass kit, wind the wastegate up on the turbo, do the manifold mod because of the higher EGTs and get an EGT gauge to monitor the EGT temps as they will be hotter.

    You need to make the car breath better, this will reduce smoke and EGT temps, it will also make the car go even better.

    If you have done all this, then it is probably the file, it may be over fueling.

    cheers baz, i've fitted egr blanking kit, installed new loom with computer and removed centre muffler but hadn't touched boost as it seemed to be peaking at around 15 pound on gauge i installed. will replace hoses although they looked fine internally to the naked eye. any advice on which intercooler as was told later update model is as good as most aftermarket items??

    Push towards 18psi

    Is the gauge accurate?

    I don't know if the update intercooler is as good as the aftermarket cooler, it is larger than the early model D2, I have the ASE intercooler in mine, when adjust the boost if you don't have a boost box, as Tombie says 18psi should be fine.

    Silicon hoses will improve things as well, also do the manifold mod as soon as you can, because the studs will break more often now with the higher EGTs that the re-map gives you, I did mine myself, just grind out the webbing between the ports, this allows for better expanding and contracting which lessons the the frequency of the studs breaking and warping the manifold.

    The D2A stock intercooler, is bigger/better that the D2 intercooler.

    The aftermarket intercoolers are bigger/better again. (at least, this is for ASE and TD5Alive intercoolers)

    Probably the tune is just wrong.....for your vehicle.
