    Blow buy causes TD5

    Hi All,

I have recently purchased a 01 TD5 Disco with 176000KM on it. Was concerned with Blow buy on it before purchasing it and had a Landrover specialist check it out. He said it is more than normal but shouldn't be a problem to drive after doing some secific roadtests. The specialist said it should be using heaps of oil if it was breathing this heavy however the previous owner claims that it is not using oil and the drive back to Darwin confirmed this. Also the previous owner was very taken aback when shown the blow buy and has ensured prentiive maintence etc has been carried out at all times as he has used it as a long distance family tourer We think it might be pressurising the head somehow causing the puffs of smoke for want of a better term.

Just drove it back from Vic to Darwin with no problems at all No oil or coolant consumption at all and vehicle drove really well can anyone help shed some light please. I did notice that the temp needle basically sat on half but kept fluctuating constantly, a lot more than I would normally expect from normal thermostat operation. Am I on the right track before starting to commit funds problem chasing and could it be a head gasket starting to let go.

The motor has had the EGR removal done, Fuel pum replaced arlound 6000 km ago and has a DP chip fitted if this is any help?

Also does any one know a good Landrover Mechanic (diesel) in the Darwin area?

Another point to add does the coolant resevoir always make a hissing noise when releasing the cap even when the motor is cold after having a run?

Oil consumption isn't a factor with blowby.
Blowby is cylinder pressure making it past the rings on the compression stroke. Worn rings or a glazed bore are the only causes but all diesels breathe regardless as a function of the compression ratios.

It should also blow blue smoke if it has blow by, have someone follow you and give it a boot full to see if it is.

If as you have said it hisses when you take the expansion tank cap off, it's a good chance it's over pressurising and the head gasket is on it's way out, get a low coolent/temp alarm to monitor it better, don't rely on the temp gauge on a TD5.

Seeing as you have a DP Chip, get yourself an EGT gauge as well, your EGTs will be higher with the power upgrade, you will also need to modify your exhaust manifold, do a search in "The Good Oil" section for the exhaust mod.

Took the Disco in today to check for a suspected leaky injector and the news is not good.

I am so over cars at the moment and cant seem to take a trick.

    Diagnosis by scan tool

down on compression cylinders 1 and 2
    MAF Airflow system faulty and
oil detected in injector lead line.

The annoying thing iss the car is driving fine, doesn't use oil or water and appears to have plenty of power.

    What are my options??

MAF might be nothing more than just dirty and need a clean, injector harness upgrades are cheap and readily available and can temporarily be cleaned or the cause of the ingress temporarily patched. Many have done it as have I.

As for the compression, depends on the actual pressure and the total variation across all cylinders.
What Scantool and other diagnostic units tell you is one thing, how it's interpreted is another ie, you need to read between the lines

If these are the only issues you have, your lucky!!

    X2

Get yourself some CFC MAF cleaner and clean the element on the MAF, also the AAP sensor.

Rovacraft or Karcraft are good for the injector harness, it's very easy to change.
