Tony,
First of all, a low battery voltage during cranking will cause these lights to come on so leave the engine running for about 10 minutes, then switch off and try again.
The switch is about $400 odd actually, (USED to be $650+!!!) and is reasonably easy to fit except the CAT gets in the way on 2001/2 onward Td5.
They require aligning, there is a special tool BUT if you carefully scribe a line across the old switch housing and onto the trans casing at the front bolt of the switch, then just transfer the corresponding mark to the new switch and refit to trans all should be well.

rang P/ R and they say its the inhibitor switch and it could go into limp mode if we go out driving on sunday
did a quick google and found an 08 post from a UK site from someone in oz saying they were around the $500 mark
