    Is this a Catalytic converter?

    Hi folks,

    After 3 months of poking my way through various forums, i had to resort to this desperate measure!

    My TD5 is made in Dec 2001, but is marked as a 2002 model (says so when you plugged in for diagnostics). It has the EGR cooler and CDL.

    Some forums say TD5's doesn't have a Cat, some does. Some says Aussie spec TD5s doesn't have Cats, Some says it does after 2002/2003. Some says only UK and Euro TD5's have Cats. To add to the confusion, the tubular thingy (pic below) doesn't look like any Cat in my previous cars. Even mechanics are confused!...One mechanic said " Yup, thats a Cat...you should remove it to.." another said " Nah!...thats not a Cat!"

    So HELP!!!

    If it is, I've never seen a cylindrical one before, it looks like it is the first "box" in the exhaust system so, if you had one, that'd be it. In my experience, cats have always been squarish to accommodate the brick inside. I got a mate that works for Ford in Geelong & his job basically entails testing all the new cars ford produce to see what metal coating is required for each to comply with Aus standards in regard to emissions & he happens to own a 2001 TD5 so I'll ask him if his has a Cat or not & get back to you.

    It's the cat converter. Fitment was hit & miss on 03 & 04 models.

    Diesel cats are different to petrol units as they are treating different elements so no resemblance to a normal cat.

    The V8 D2 has one cylinder (RH) and one box type (LH) cat.

    After I ripped the front out of the round one mine are gone too. Same emissions, better flow, better performance (all pre/post dyco tests).

    I will disagree & am pretty sure that the Aus market did not receive cats on the TD5's. (Regardless of Year). Dead give away is there is no electrical connection to this. All CAT's need an electrical connection of some sort to read diagnostics to the Engine ECU.
    This is just the primary muffler, then the main & finally a rear silencer.

    Nothing actually plugs into a cat. There will be a O2 sensor before and on newer systems (and earlier US (esp california)) one after as well to run a comparison of pre and post cat gas content which gives an idea of cat temps and efficiencies.

    I remember a lifetime ago knocking the guts outta the cat on my inline, tweaked, 6cyl AU falcon & it made a huge difference. Does this also apply to the 4L V8?
    If so, what'd you do with the O2 sensors? They are plugged into the cats yes?

    Cats have no electrics.

    No reason you can't have a cylindrical cat.
