Left the centre muffler, no cats. Sounds just fine, without drone, not to loud.

so to revive an old thread, did we ever get a clear answer as to yes or no that the threadstarters image was of a cat-converter for a td5? I have the same thing and my gut says cat converter but Im not sure. I want to (if i have one) to remove the cat and replace with a down pipe from terrafirma through lucky8 Lucky8 Llc. - Take the road less traveled..., it is a Terrafirma Defender 98-07/Discovery II Td5 'de cat' Down Pipe. here is a pic of my own rig with the item in question next to the tranny.

Definitely a cat, I am in the same boat and will be replacing the pipe when time and funds allow, apparently it makes quite a difference

Thats the cat - it's between the centre muffler and the turbo. The TD5 is a very clean motor and they didn't have to have them, but they were later added when emission rules were further tightened and LR couldn't guarantee that ALL TD5's that came off the line would pass the emission tests. I guess you could buy a new non-CAT down pipe, or you could just get a factory nonCAT down pipe, there will be heaps around and probably a lot cheaper.
    Cheers

After having read and re-read all of this thread one thing is for certain. After 1st January 2002 all diesel Discoverys had to comply with ADR79/00 emission rules. If earlier Discovery 2s didn't have a cat but D2as did, then this would explain What Slunnie has just said.

All Discovery V8s will have cats no matter what due to ADR37 whic came in for 4x4 based vehicles in mid 1988.

I've been studying the national code for light vehicle modification lately and trying to prepare for any possible setbacks from an engineer when it comes to comply a 5.7L LS1 D2a that I'm planning. The code has plenty of information and really dispels myth from fact that commonly goes around on motor vehicle online forums.

Hit the nail on the head! This is the way I had to do it too - it's the only way when you're developing.

I'm also really keen to follow your LS1 build, now that will be an awesome setup!
    Cheers
