    Also,
8 mm hex key on 3/8 drive with extension (for removing starter motor - not sure if it's needed on the TD5)
Torx drivers (with hole for the MAF sensor and bigger size for the rear door latch adjustment)
7/16 (I think!) ring spanner for brake bleeding

I agree. It's $150 for a handful of tools in a plastic box with a mounting bracket.

I wouldnt travel without a monkey wrench (Stillson)! Years ago I bought an aluminium handled Ridgid one, it's come in handy many times and is not heavy, see this one:

Thanks for all the useful input!

Just came across an interesting post documenting tools required for a 60K mile/100K km service on a Discovery here:

    60,000 mile service report

I've de-dupped the tool list and it looks like it might provide a good basis for a d2 toolkit, altho being for a V8 there may be some changes required to suit TD5?

    TOOLS:

5mm hex key (transmission drain plug)
12 inch adjustable wrench (cooler line fitting)

    1/2" ratchet
    1/2" drive breaker bar
    1/2" x 3" extension bars
    1/2" x 6" extension bars

    8mm socket (heater pipe fixing)
    10mm socket (hold down nuts)
    13mm 6-point socket
    13mm 12-pt. socket (caliper fixings)
    17mm 6-point socket
17mm socket on 1/2 inch drive breaker bar (drive flange fixings)

13/16" 6-point socket (radiator top plug)

15mm offset ring spanner (tensioner bolt)
    17mm ring spanner

5/8" open end spanner (swivel nut on fuel line)

4mm nut driver (IACV attaching screws)
6mm nut driver (intake hose clamp)
1/4" nut driver (hose clamp screws)

    TX-25 torx driver

    Rubber mallet
    Hose spreading pliers
    Lug nut wrench (wheel nuts)
Flat blade screw driver (dust cap)
Snap ring pliers (circlip on axle shaft)
Hammer and cold chisel (flatten tab washer)
    Hub nut socket (hub nuts)
    Seal puller (hub grease seal)

    Hi-Lift jack

Anyway you'll need Torx sockets for the swaybars and various bit on the car as well, make sure they are the solid type not the ones with the hole.

A breaker bar and viscous fan spanner for when you need to take the radiator out and in.

What tools are needed for viscous fan removal out of curiosity? thanks

angle grinder, sheet of 3mm flat plate steel 70mm wide and a caliper to mark out with..

32+36mm from memory depending on varient (yes Im too lazy to walk out to the shed and measure mine.

that last list you put up is a pretty good start point for a kit that should get most of the work done.

you'll want more than just the t25 and 5mm allen key though..

no using the hi lift jack for servicing. Or if your going to at least name me in your will as recieving something before you start work.

    36mm skinny spanner (5mm thick)for the nut and a 3 hole special tool (C Spanner)to hold the viscous hub(also 5mm thick).

I made my own, bought a Ford viscous fan remover and ground it out to 36mm and traced a copy of the viscous hub holder and cut it out from some 5mm alloy plate.

Makes it so much easier to remove the fan.

Found this site for fan removal
I will make them 5mm flat I hope
Considering the you have to remove the fan for belt replacement or radiator etc etc this tool must be a "dont leave home without it"

as mentioned above this pretty well covers it, As for the fan hub spanner, they aren't all that expensive and an essential part of the kit. I made my own by grinding out a spanner I already had.

    Vehicle spares and tools

Also 11mm on a D2 is needed to undo brake lines (flat) and to remove seats (ring or socket )
