    Carrier Oil Leak

    My 2004 Disco TD5 has an oil leak between the camshaft carrier and the Cylinder Head block. My LR mechanic informed me this is not a gasket but the two faces are sealed by "gunk"> However on removing the camshaft cover he informed me that to remove the carrier involved removing the Head bolts as they are through the carrier.His manual stated that if the bolts are removed it was "very likely" the head would distort and that a new head would be required.Fortunately he phoned before doing. The leak is minor although annoying, and as the price for repair was close approaching half the value of the wagon I declined the repair.
    I am amazed something so minor could esculate to a horror price also what a design fault???
    Grateful to hear from anyone with this fault and whether it was corrected without a change of the head.

    No need to change the head for this job. I've never heard of such a thing anyway.

    The seal apart from the front round plastic disc type plug is all in the rocker cover gasket. The rocker cover is held on by short bolts into the head, but have nothing to do with holding head on. Sounds like a shonk.!!!

    He's referring to the head assy - it's basically 2 halves & the camshaft fits between them. It's this joint between the halves that's leaking.

    Scouse is on the money. If you split that joint you have to remove the head bolts and you will have to fit a new gasket / head bolts etc

    I have just had my head cheacked again after it had been fitted for 16 odd months.
    The face was as it was handed to me last time

    Undo the head bolts in reverse sequence,
    I "cracked" mine and only went 90deg to do this,
    I then did them all 180 deg.
    I then followed the same sequence and lossed them all.
    This should help to remove the preshure evenly.

    Get the head tested and the face machined(this is what L/R don't agree with).
    Check with the experts here as I believe the hardening of the head face is @ 12thou.
    So safe to remove up to 8 safely.
    Oh and find a decent machine shop, my bloke does race engines ect. so I trust him.

    I have exactly the same problem, I am considering a new head gasket and this job but a bit scared of what I will find when I take the head off. currently just cleaning up the oil where ever I go, cheaper then doing the head.

    That said. If I don't have any other engine problems is there a high likelyhood of head damage after 350,000km?

    Does anyone have a parts list with part numbers for a head gasket change? would be good to look at costs of parts. might be worth putting in an order OS with our strong AU$

    If I shave 8thou do I need a thicker gasket?

    This is looking like I am coming up to some long nights in the shed.

    Probably not, esp if hasn't been overheated. I had mine machined around 6thou when I took it off. You will need it skimming if removing it, IMO, even if undamaged, as the headgasket actually bites slightly into the face of the cylinder head.

    Carrier leak

    Thanks to all replies. I now have a better understanding of the problem.My mechanic is a specialist LR mechanic. The manual apparently states that removal of the head COULD cause distortion thus requiring a new head.It appears from the answers from you guys that no one has had this trouble, and as mentioned LR is against refurbishing the head surface.
