    Towing With A Discovery TD

    Hello Everyone,
I have just joined (no vehicle yet) but I might need to buy one so, has anyone here towed a big van (2.7 tonnes loaded) with an older Landrover Discovery TD?

They have the towing capacity, but do they have enough power?
I have a ballweight of around 280kgs plus, so is this asking too much as well?
Amongst a number of reasons for asking this question, I will need a temporary
tow vehicle for up to twelve months, while waiting for a new vehicle.

They are quite inexpensive (from $7k and up)and readily available, so could suit me for my short term purposes.

Thanks for all answers, (previously owned a new 1993 Disco V8 auto and loved it!)

Hi We just compleated an 900 klm trip from Melton Vic. to Port Macdonell in SA Towing a 21 ft van a little over 2 ton, tandem axle With our Stock 2002 D2 Td5 auto. Really happy, able to travel at 100klm most of the time, lost a bit on some of the hills but thats to be expected.

We were using a Hayman reese weight distribution hitch on the standard LR tow bar with no ill effects (No ace). We often found Toyotas and Nissans towing smaller Vans or camper trailers in our way! A bit of careful driving to look after the engine and keep the revs down on steep hills, dropping back to 3rd and using sports mode to start from scratch on hills from a complete stop.

Fist time we have towed a van this big with the Disco and it did a better job than the 80 series I used to own.

I understand you are more interested in the towing capabilities of the TDi rather than than the later TD5.

I have a Disco 300 TDi and have towed around 1.5 tonnes with it. No dramas at that weight, aside from the need to go lightly on the loud pedal up steep hills, unless you want to over-fuel the engine whilst fighting against gravity, resulting in greatly increased egt's.

They tow well with heavier weights from what I hear, providing that you have a correctly loaded tow unit, good suspension, etc. Of course you won't have the initial take off grunt of a v8 or TD5.

    Cheers

I tow 2t with mine regularly and I couldn't ask for a better tow car. Mine is Td5 auto with coils. However, mine has had the ECU remapped and is producing approx 120kW and 380Nm. (Std is 100kW and 300Nm). I would recommend getting some airbags in the rear coils(not needed, but nice). Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing.

Be aware though, towing can knock your fuel figures around. Mine blows out to 12lt/100km when towing.
