Hi Everyone I not long ago sold my 1994 Range Rover Vogue SE ClassiC as I felt bad using it offroad etc etc.
I have 9 or so K to spend on a 4x4 to use for offroading, camping 4 times a year and occaisional spare car. I can either get a TD5 with 300,000 kms on it or a v8 with 150,000kms for similar money, I am concerned about the V8 as all I here is liner issues etc etc I also LOVE p38a's but they make me really nervous, or Disco 1's are cheap cheap.
I will be honest it will get "driven" and used offroad to the full extent of the term.
Feelings anyone?
(P.S I got offered a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7 with quadra drive for 8k hahahah)

In my opinion going from a softdash classic, the td5 disco 2 was dissapointing for me, to the point we are looking at buying a pathfinder
I just sold a soft dash classic, one of the limited edition ones with TWR rims and chrome bumpers. Lovely car but perhaps to good and rare for my application.
If you are looking for an off road toy then go the D1, they are cheap to buy and easy to modify with less electronics. If you were doing more touring then probably go a TD5 D2. With a budget of 9K you should be able to get a well sorted D1 offroad toy.

D 1 V8 is my choice too for you or even a good tdi if you can find one.
A good and sorted RRC is good choice too.
I sometimes spot one with a 4.6 too.
Or get a base model for little $$$ and build it up over time so its just the way you like it.
D1 3.5 would be the go.My brother has one that has just clocked over 300k,had virtually nothing ever go wrong with it.You would be surprised how good they are on fuel as well.
P38 also makes me nervous,& a cheap,high mileage D2 will probably be a problem as it may not have been looked after,or serviced properly.
P38 all the way if you are only using it 4 times a year and as an occasional drive.(the rest of the year you can work on it to sort all the problems with it in your price range)
Why?
While doing the road part of your trip to get to the 4wding part it is way more stylish/fun/cruisy to drive.
And when off rd you will be pleasantly suprised at what you can do with it.
The D1 3.9 V8's were a peach of a motor. They dont seem to have the issues tat some of the D2's had. The best thing to do to them if you go early new dash - like 95 like mine - is a Scorcher ignition - ford/holden V8 dizzy as modified. They run very well on LPG too.
Off road - locker, some long travel shocks with a mild lift and a great machine. Get some roof racks for those camping trips. Cant beat them for the money for what you are after.

After my 78 and 88 classics, the D2 TD5 ride is appallingly hard. However, most of my trips are over 500 kilometres out around Alice so the extra range of the diesel is a winner for me. It is also nice that it does not conk out at every puddle.
Hey Pedro - what springs would make my D2 ride more like my 88 RR?
