1999 Discovery II V8 Fuel Pump Removal

In the workshop manual it says that, in order to remove the fuel pump, you need to remove the right hand rear seat and trim casing to enable the carpet to be pulled back. Do you have to do this in order to pull back the carpet? Do you also have to use the LRT-19-009 tool to remove the fuel pump locking ring? LRT.

Try searching for an answer, I'm pretty sure it was discussed recently.

Alot of discos have had the carpet pulled up before due to leaking fuel lines or fuel pump replacements. When I had to do mine I found that the carpet had already been cut just up under the trim on the sides. All I had to do was unscrew the plastic around the third row seat anchors on the floor and pull up the carpet. When finished the carpet tucked neatly back under the trim. EASY and you cannot tell. To get the lock ring off use a cold chisel and hammer - I know it sounds heavy handed but it works and doesn't do any damage.

Many thanks for the tip about the carpet and using a chisel and hammer to undo the locking ring. LRT

    Question Locking Ring Removal

Mattyg, can you remember when you used a cold chisel and hammer to remove the fuel pump locking ring, did you undo it anticlockwise or clockwise?

Anticlockwise. I wouldn't use a cold chisel, a blunt screwdriver is kinder. Better still, if you have access to a welder make a tool to engage the projections on the top face of the tin ring. If you need a pic and measurements, I have a loose D2 tank with locking ring hanging about.

Cool. It's raining heavily at the moment, I'll go and drag it out in the morning.

OK I dragged out the tank, and made up a 10 minute tool for it. You may have to adapt it when you access your pump depending on the clearance around the locking ring. (don't arsk me, I don't have a D2 available...)

Teeth are 25mm apart (1 inch) and diameter of toothed circle is 127mm (5 in).

Cut a piece of 25mm square tube 122mm long, weld two 50mm long bits of 25 x 3mm flat steel to the ends. Weld an old wheel nut , bolt or socket to the middle. Unscrew as per normal RH thread (anticlockwise).
