I would suggest than if you have someone do work on the vehicle, that you budget for not less than $100.00/h labour, plus parts.
I have a general question as to an approximate cost to get several items looked into. My d2 deisel may need the injectors checked , the timing and a possible leak in the fuel system , therefore the pump regulator etc as nothing is obvious it will be a hit and miss affair as i work from one end to the other. i am asking as i have to decide where to go with spending on the car as it has been in and out of the workshops since i left the canning stock route last year with a perforated fuel return line. any ideas would be helpful as i have to decide on the future of the car in the next while.

Hmm a bit of "a peice of string here."
1/ Timing is via chain and unless the the head has been off or the cam sprocket bolts have come loose (very unlikely) I cant see why this would be cause, however, a check should see this done in under an hour.
2/ "injectors checked" depends on what this really means.
If you are going to have them removed and sent to someone to be tested. ( Last I know of there is no shop with the capability to definitively test these, happy to be corrected)You must plan for new O-rings and Copper washers at about $25/ injector and around 4 hours for removal and refit. Rocker cover gasket replacement a good idea also. New injectors can be had from UK for about $320 AUD each (genuine Delphi) Second hand in Oz I havnt seen for less than $300. (again happy to here better news)
3/Fuel regulator about $300 and 1.5 hours to fit.
I f you are paying someone to get this done you can get a fairly close estimate as previously posted at $100/hr (should cover consumables in this in most instances)
If your mech is sourcing these parts there will be a mark up and they may not shop around so there could be some variables here also.
I have followed your troubles since Darwin and may be out of line with this comment, but..... seems you just dont have the people with the understanding or willingness to get this sorted.
Have your problems all continued since the fuel line issue?
It seems as though it is all still associated there, unless you ended up with the system contaminated in the process.
I see your dilema with costs as trouble shooting is usually where most labour is consumed and never shows any benefit if the fault doesnt manifest itself readily.
Where are you located now?
What are your symptoms now?
cheers
yes this has been ongoing for a while. at the time the engine was being rebuilt due to cylinders 1 and 2 being hydrauliced i was looking at the markets column and contemplating a second hand swap but was convinced the work done would be enough. sadly it hasnt and the continual outlay of cash at landy specialists has resulted in calling the round Aust. trip over and return home. the service yesterday pointed out some issues where despite new gaskets and such there are several oil leaks and even the gearbox is leaking after a recent repair. so for the time being i will deal with the gutless thirsty leaky disco until such time as i get a job and look at how much more i want to spend. in hindsight i think it would have been cheaper and easier to have brought the car home from darwin instead of taking the route i did.
thanks for the costs time for more thought.
