My new D2 and bloody Traction Control!!!

    Hi,

    Purchased a 2000 V8 2000ES last week

Was happy with car until I went off roading at the weekend with mates from work. Already had loads of stick over buying a LandRover!!!!
So, I can guess you can imagine how hapy I was when I was the only one who could not get up a hill!!!! Yep! all the Prados and mitsubishis got up...even a Jeep...NOt ME!!!

    All to do with either...
    • Driver error
    • Traction Control

Driver error...well I have to learn how this traction control works but going by other posts I have read tonight. It should cut out with revs...mine did not.
    Traction control.....

    Well you tell me.

We stopped on a hill to allow one car at a time to go through a steep, slippery and rutted area.
Come my turn. I accelerated forward...o no I did not. The traction control kicked in and would not allow the car to accelerate...no matter how much throttle I gave it....needed speed to get over the first hump and then momentum to get through the steep rutted part. But mine just continued to go slow!! got stuck on the second part. Apparantly I had just one wheel driving or spinning..the same wheel.

So, I would really appreciate advise and help on this. My Pathfinder would of breezed this!!!

Now looking forward to weeks and weeks of ribbing...yep..Chilly and his ONE WHEELED drive LANDROVER!!!!

    HELP!

Now going to search on CDL...mine does not have the lever...want to see what I have to look for on the box to see if it is a case of adding the selection gear.

    Cheers

    Chilly

    Hi
I too have coped a ribbing ( not to mention getting snatched out by a jeep wrangler) we have a 2000 d2 td5 I did have the 3 amigo's on that trip and that certainally doesn't help, turns out i had to replace the shuttle valve a pretty cheap fix and now all is well.

You might need too supply some more info

Do you have any lights that stay on permantly while driving ie,

    *Traction control
    *Hill decent
    *abs

When traction control is working and a wheel/wheels lose traction for whatever reason your TC light on the dash should come on and stay on while the system is operational you can hear it to, it will apply the brake to the spinning wheel/wheels, holding the throttle steady and not backing of you should continue to move foward.

If what you saying is correct and your TC light comes on? but the wheel/wheels keep spinning you could have air in you brake lines or abs unit?

You probably need to get the vehicle scanned for error codes and go from there, it's a process of elimination until you get to the cause

2000 should have the spigot for CDL where your front tailshaft comes out from the centre diff housing look /feel for a 8mm thread with two flat sides at it's base on the top of the housing hard to see.

    Cheers db

*Traction controlOnly comes on when wheel spinning. Sometimes without me realising

*Hill decentNot once. Did not use this function either. Was not sure how it worked. Have read book now but would be nervous using this without practice on easy slopes. Gain some experience.
    *abs ABS worked fine.

When traction control is working and a wheel/wheels lose traction for whatever reason your TC light on the dash should come on and stay on while the system is operational you can hear it to, it will apply the brake to the spinning wheel/wheels,I believe this was happening holding the throttle steadyMaybe I was going wrong here. I wanted more speed so applied the throttle. Needed momentum to get up. Perhaps this is not the case with TC?? and not backing of you should continue to move foward.

If what you saying is correct and your TC light comes on? but the wheel/wheels keep spinning you could have air in you brake lines or abs unit?Have planned to replace fluids. So will soon be able to elimante that.

Thanks for that invaluable help. You will know hao I am feeling at this moment. The prado could not even pull me up with me driving!! New ATR tyres on too.

    Thank you,

I'll post a few photos of my discovery in the pictures section. One will show it stopped and front wheel of the ground.

You need to get the CDL lever to be able to activate the centre diff, then you will go anywhere your mates will and some, don't knock traction control, it is brilliant, especially when you have the centre diff engaged.

I was amazed how well my TC prevented me getting stuck in mud on a incline. I dont have the CDL lever and dont get a single wheel spinning for long. Got to be a TC and/or brake problem.

Have an 04 D2a and even without the CDL engaged the TC works brilliantly to get you up many a rugged spot. When it does actually stop (which has only been a couple of times) I have generally almost made it to the top. Follow the vast amount of instructions on retro fitting the CDL lever here and you won't look back (well maybe to check if that Prado your towing up the hill is still there)

    Cheers,

    Peter.

Don't worry about it Chilly. You may have lost the battle, but you'll win the war.
My mates hanging it on me when I suggested I was getting a Land Rover, made me more determined to get one and prove them wrong.

I have a 2004 TD5 with traction control and no CDL - there is a real 'technique' to getting the most from the TC system.
I had some tuition from the Land Rover Experience guys here in the UK and their trick was to put the car into low box third gear. You then give plenty of revs and waggle the steering wheel from left to right quickly as you make progress - this fools the TC into switching effort to each wheel in turn. Do not reduce the revs until you're clear of the mud and it'll be fine!

This has got me through some pretty heavy going in the past...

When my D2 was new, the TC system worked 10x better than now... Must be because it's 10yrs old would probably need OEM brake pads new discs, and maybe the TC pump ?
