    Should I Buy This D2

    hi all

this is my first post on this forum, i have been doing some research into what i am about to ask, but am still a little confused.

my uncle is selling his Manual 1999 D2 TD5, it has 201,000km on the clock and comes with the following:

    snorkelSLS (Self Levelling Suspension)
    Genuine Land Rover Bull Bar
    Genuine Land Rover Tow Bar
    Electric Brake Wiring
New Rear Air Bag Suspension & Compressor
    New Fuel Pump
    UHF radio
    snorkel
    plus all standards

he is asking $2,500 because it has a blown head gasket and needs a new clutch.

i have gotten a quote for $3,000 to replace gasket, do oil cooler and oil pump bolt, and full head service. And have been quote $2000 for the new clutch.

i have grown up going places in this car and know it has been treated well, although i dont know if it has service history, and i know it hasn't had any major issues.

is it worth having a look at? is $2500 reasonable

    thanks in advance

Well as you have got some known history with the D2 it sounds a good deal.
All up it is going to cost you $7k, have a look around and try and find one for less than $10k!!! Not many out there at this sort of money!!

Only potential down side is if there is a fault in the head and you need to buy a new one, this will set you back some more $$$

The up side of the deal is you have a reasonably well reconditioned engine and a new clutch, this should see some trouble free motoring for at least another 150kks.

Be sure to get that radiator some attention (well flushed)and the inter cooler cleaned out.

If you like the look of it and want a D2 TD5 its not a bad truck for a first car for less than $10k

Looks like it will cost you $7500 to get it on the road with recently repaired / replaced head, oil cooler, oil pump bolt, clutch, fuel pump, airbags and compressor. Plus you know the previous owner and therefore the previous history of the car - how it was maintained, how it was used and abused.

Now look on Carsales.com.au for TD5 Disco - private sales are going ~ $12k for similar

Do you want to pay $7.5k for one you know an awful lot about or maybe ~$12k for one you know nothing about.

That's the way I would look at it.

I think that if you dont buy it you should PM me your uncles phone number and I will. I am serious.

If you can do the work yourself, this will be a good buy, as stated by others already. But...
If you cant do the work yourself or have a good mate who can, you may find it easier to buy a running vehicle.

    cheers

Sounds like a good deal you could save some coin if you done some of the work your self..
I would jump on it you still come out 5gs in front and you know that the head and other bits and peices are good post up pics if you get it..

sorry, i just realised a mistake, i accidently wrote 3k for the head not 6 k. is it still worth it.

i have never done any of my own servicing, is it hard?

what would i need to do to do it myself, is it easy the learn?

how much would i save buy doing it my self?

Like anything else in this world, servicing is something that you can learn.

It will save you a couple of hundred $$$ each time, and you get to know the car a lot better.

While the clutch & head MAY be out of your league at this stage, there are other things you can do yourself.

If you have the money, then do it.

There are plenty of people on this forum that are willing to help, but i think you are finding that out.

6K to do the head etc seems a tad heavy! I think most who've replied saw $3k as being about right. Get another opinion if I were you. I'm sure someone here can recommend a good LR mechanic in your area.
