Dude, $2.5k is a steal, just buy the thing and fix it. Parts are soooo cheap from the UK at the moment. You will hate the V8 with current fuel prices.

With the head fixed you will still come out on top, and it will be an excellent learning experience for you.

Take it from someone who is young, I got my D2 from the rentals for a pretty good price and I am learning more and more about it every day, sometimes its frustrating but once its back again you just can't beat the awesomeness of driving it.

I've done the headgasket, the clutch...gosh I've even written the thing off on Fraser Island but I still couldn't stand the thought of selling it. Once you have done so much work on a car and have so many great memories, you just cannot let go of it.

The point I am getting at is, buy this car and start your journey...

Being young myself I sort of understand where your thought patterns may be heading. My advice to you is... save your coin, and buy the land rover "you" want in the future. If you don't have the time, space, or basic mechanical knowledge to work on the car yourself... don't bother.

...i cant mend my own clothes...so you know what? I buy new ones!

Is it the amount of work, or the cost of parts / materials / labour that is the concern?

it is a combination of all three.

and although i would love to get it and fix it up, i won't have the time. sigh

i am truly disappointed i am not getting it, but with 6 TEE courses and then uni to worry about i am afraid it will just sit there and rust.

come on... don't be like that.

i am only looking for a D3 or D4 because of better reliability.
i want/need a land rover that i can drive to work and uni in, that will get me there and back without drama.

later on when i have time i would love to buy a D2, but currently circumstances demand a good working reliably car.

i know that the D3 and D4 aren't bullet proof, but they are better than a D2.

i have greatly appreciated all of your valuable contributions, and hope that you don't feel i have given you the run around.
