    D2 Rear Audio Controls

    Hey all.
Hopefully I've put this in the right spot

first time post, have tried searching and not had much luck.
Trying to find out if I change the standard head unit on my highline disco 2, if I can still use the rear audio controls as they come in handy for the tribe on long trips (and short ones it seems) I don't have the factory DVD in the roof, and I appreciate that I will lose the CD stacker, the steering wheel controls will stay (hopefully) as the new head unit will have inputs for remote audio control. But I would really like to retain the rear audio controls, can this be done

    Firstly, welcome to the fold.

Secondly, you have rear audio control???

I haven't ever heard of them. I know there is rear ac, but didn't know about the audio.

    Any chance of a pic?

As for loosing them with a head unit change, it will depend on how they are wired in. Assuming for a min that they are in parallel to the steering wheel controls, then they should still work.

Someone will no doubt be along shortly to give you a better answer.

The rear controls are part of the Harman system I've got in my 2002 ES. There is a headphone plug on each side and controls to change source i.e. CD/Radio/Tape plus volume and track. Allows the rear pax to listen to something different to what is coming over the main speakers.

    ok,,
so after running around the disco with headphones on and the cd player blaring away

it would appear that in a Harmon Kardon equiped Disco
The front passengers can be listening to a cd,,
the second set can be watching & listening to a DVD
and the 3rd row can be listening to the radio.

The headunit even has a little "jacked in" symbol

Hey guys, thanks for the replys, and yeah, the controls are purely for the 3rd row passengers. Really handy when you have a few kids, it saves arguments

I really dont want to lose them, but the head unit needs changing to something with iPod control. And the old head unit (alpine?) has been attacked with something that has melted the clear face like acetone or something.

Anyways, seems according to the Rave cd the rear controls are driven from the head unit, so I may be out of luck

If your current head unit looks like it has melted, it probably has.

You will probably find that your rear vision mirror has leaked its fluid out, and this is in direct alignment with the head unit. It is this fluid that helps with the auto-dimming feature of the mirror.

There have been a couple of threads on this in the past, and there are a number of replacement options available.

OK, if indeed it was the rear view mirror, it thankfully has been replaced, as it works a treat.

I have looked and looked, and can't find any threads about replacement options, but I will keep looking. Even Google is not my friend at this stage.

As a by the by, does anyone know if the speaker outputs on the old head unit are used, or if all the channels are through pre outs (RCA's) to the factory amp under the pax seat ??

Just wondering if maybe the speaker outs are used purely for the 3rd row pax

    Back to RAVE I go

    FYI

    straight from RAVE

Radio headphone amplifiers (high line system)
The rear mounted radio headphone amplifiers are located in the lower rear quarter trim casing and are held in position
by a clip on the side of the headphone amplifier. Mode and function buttons are located on a control panel, the mode
button allows each of the rear seat passengers to independently select from the radio, tape or CD-autochanger. The
driver and the rear seat passengers can each listen to any of the audio devices they select. However the radio
cassette setting has overall priority e.g:
    l
If the radio cassette is using a radio wave band (AM or FM), the headphone user will be able to select the cassette
tracks or CD-autochanger. The user will be able to listen to same radio band that is selected on the radio
cassette, but will not be able to change the station selected.

    l
If the radio cassette has CD-autochanger selected, the headphone amplifiers will allow listening to the compact
disk but will not allow track changes. The headphone user will be able to select on all of the radio bands or
    cassette tracks.

    l
If the radio cassette has tape selected, the headphone amplifiers will allow listening to the tape but will not allow
track changes. The headphone user will be able to select all radio bands or CD's on the CD-autochanger.
If one headphone amplifier unit has control of the tape player, CD or radio, the other headphone amplifier will be able
to listen and be able to change tape tracks or radio bands. Other buttons allow a search seek function of radio band
or compact disk track, reversal of the tape, radio station and volume adjustment depending on the current operating
mode. If one radio headphone amplifier has control of the radio, tape or CD autochanger the other radio headphone
amplifier is able to change the track or radio band selected. A headphone socket with a glow ring is located on the
control panel. When a headphone is turned on , a 'headphone-module active' signal is sent to the radio cassette
player. The design incorporates panel illumination and a glow-ring to locate the socket in low light conditions. To
control the audio output from the radio headphone amplifiers, signals are sent to and received from the radio cassette

    player.
