    Potential buyer...

    Hi all,

I am looking at Disco 2 TD5s as they seem pretty good value but I know part of that is the fact that a lot of potential buyers are scared off by their reputation For example - I saw a nice looking one recently that has the ABS light issue (not sure if it's all 3 amigos - his mechanic said (to me) that he needs a new shuttle valve (appx 1200AUD). Would you go near a Disco 2 that already had this issue ? if the price was right ?

I'm looking for something that's cheapish (or good value in the 10-20k price bracket i.e. can buy a vehicle with some life left in it still) capable offroad, customisable, comfortable and not so slow it's a liability so I think the Disco 2 is a good potential fit.

    Cheers

D2's are just as reliable or un-reliable as most other breeds of 4wd's. Nothing beats a good service record and known history.
There are several causes of the 2 amigos, 3 amigos etc. Get it checked independently and know what your in for. You will find all the hints and tricks on this forum.

P.S I have D2 V8 for sale in the Markets section if interested. No 3 amigos and plenty of goodies.

Yeah thanks - I saw that and I think I've read that in the past but I can't stretch to a 2002-4 so haven't relooked at it - maybe I should anyway - probably not too much difference in this area (I know the sls and diff differences)

    Cheers

Search for a thread about the option B fix for the 3 amigo's and the shuttle valve..Think its called D2 Virgin Islands..someone will know the 1 I mean and post the link im sure.

Also search for the many threads about buying a D2, will tell you the must do fixes and what to look for.

Also look at Urban Panzers site..www.discovery2.uk, its a great read with step by step fixes for the common D2 issues

Am sure you will find what you require with the D2.

    Cheers Ean

Ok - am thinking that perhaps this is a complication that you can't easily work through quickly when you're looking to buy a car interstate as you then need to get a road worthiness certificate (blue slip) and it's unlikely to be granted with this abs sensor issue. I would be happy to try option B using SWO5O0030 but that would mean having the car out of action until I could get the fix and theres no guarantee it wouldn't need a potential modulator valve kit anyway.

Ah well - guess I'll keep looking...

    Not everyone has ABS issues.

I've had my D2a for 2 ys and no real problems except normal services, a new battery, and new air bags (replaced before a long trip as a precaution).

    Never had any ABS issues!

I see references to the D2a having a few electrical 'gremlins' ironed out but can never seem to find the specifics. Are the ABS sensors/shuttle valves the same on the D2a as the D2 ?

The D2a still seems to command a much higher premium than the D2 - avg price for a vanilla 150-200k vehicle seems to be around 20k vs anything from 12-18 for a D2 from 99-02. That puts the D2a (TD5) close to the cheapest D3s you see for sale - mid 20s and upwards (usually for the 4.0 of course). Hmm - food for thought - D3 with 4.0 or D2 or D2a with TD5 ?

I bought an MY2003 D2a Td5 with 102,000kms 2 yrs ago and paid the extra 6k over an equivalent D2 hoping to get better reliability. I've still had all the usual D2 problems though, like ABS lights, fuel pressure regulator, starter contacts, ign switch, fuel pump, oil in injector loom. Fortunately I'm an ex-mechanic so parts is all it costs. Being a member here is invaluable too!
Its a great car to drive, nice colour (Monte Carlo Blue) etc, but if I had my time again I would either save the 6k and get an earlier D2 and spend the extra on repairs, or get a later D2a 2004 Classic as they seem some what better made (happy to be corrected there). I wouldnt go without the centre diff though as last weekends trip to the Flinders Ranges proved to me.
At the time I bought the D2a I was offered a 180,000km TDV6 D3 for $36k which was about 8 grand more than the D2a, and I've often wondered how that would have turned out, but I've always tried to set a budget and get the best vehicle for the money.
12 grand for a low end D2 up to mid 20's for a low end D3 4.0 is still a big jump. D2's with 140,000km at $15k seem good value. Be prepared to travel to get what you want. I travelled 800km for mine and that's not much compared to what others have, just ask Pedro.

Thanks Dave for your insight there - always good to hear what others have learned. I have noticed that there are always some real bargains to be had in TAS and WA for all kinds of 4WDs - was the case when I was looking for a Paj diesel also.

So - we're chasing the mythical 'perfected' TD5 up to the 2004 model - it's easy to think - 'maybe if I just spend a bit more I can get into x,y,z'. I've been guilty of that in the stretching of my buying criteria (maybe if I take out a Novated lease and get a D3...) - the trouble with that logic is that I'm in danger of buying a vehicle that

A, I cannot afford to 'mod' to the level that I previously held as 'required' for my purposes
    and
B, I'm nervous about damage and how much it will cost (less worried about scraping a cheaper car).

I used to do some work on cars when I was a student and had no choice (and cars were a bit simpler technology wise but I'd rather avoid 'having to'.

    Every vehicle's a compromise I guess...
