    4L V8 power steering pump

G'day guys, long time, been flat out. Have an issue with the disco if anyone can open my eyes a little further. My power steering pump is shot & was wondering if anyone had any tips/tricks they could share? My biggest concern is, how do I refill the system with fluid? As in, after the pump is replaced, what is the process? I'm not sure if filling the reservoir then running the engine till it empties the reservoir & repeating till staying steady on the full mark is they way to go but it's the only way I can think to do it off hand?
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers
    Mat

There is a bleed screw on top of the p/S Box, it should have a nipple cover, remove that let the engine idle and loosen the nipple, slightly, watch the bubbling fluid drain and keep filling your reservoir with new fluid, once you get a steady stream of straight fluid only then tighten the bleed nipple .
It is important you don't turn the wheel whilst you do this procedure.

Note: The idea of some is to fill it up and turn your steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air is not the correct way according to RAVE

Cheers mate, advise much appreciated as I would have gone the option you suggested was incorrect according to RAVE. Any tips on the actual removal of the pump?

What I did whan I replaced the pump (thanks to InWC), was to fill and while the belt was off spin by hand whuch circulated the fluid without pressure. After getting the fluid to circulate back to the reservoir, which seems to push much of the air before it, I then followed rave. Doing this I didn't have fluid pouring everywhere, for the cost of genuine fluid which seems to be what everyone recommends I lost less than 50mls.

Didn't notice your post re removal of pump. Remove A/C and ACE pumps (if fitted) only by memory. If you HAVE ACE, while you can there's a thick hose which is the pumps suction line from the reservoir. These are no longer available as a replacement (at least I couldn't find one). The hose is a different diameter at each end but you can make a replacement from a straight brass reducer and elbow and 3 pieces of hose.

Looking straight down at the reservoir on the right, you can see the tee bolt clamp where the replacement hose is fitted.

This hose leads to the reducer where it changes size to match the fitting on the back of the ACE pump. Then you have another short length of hose to an elbow which turns towards the ACE pump. You can just see the next clamp at the elbow to the right of the corrugated air inlet hose above.

Above you can see the two clamps of the reducer and first clamp of the elbow and finally the clamp on the rear of the pump.

Everything is available from Pirtek (Enzed don't have the same range of brassware) and should set you back around $30- including hose. It's not under pressure so you don't need to overtighten the clamp especially on the back of the pump as it's only cast alloy.

Power steering pump replaced, just waiting on the return hose which "should"! Be here tomorrow.
Thankyou RAVE & forum members, once again you've been a great source to call upon,
    Cheers
