    Which D2?

Which of the D2's arethe better for off road ability? Pre 2003 or post 2003.

I'd say the real early D2's that are commonly called D1's...

    cheers,

Either pre 2001 or from 2003 on are the most capable models off road because of having the centre diff lock. A pre 2001 V8 would be fine if in good knick if he mainly wants it for bush bashing and they are now pretty cheap to buy.

Personally I'd be a bit careful with the first TD5's because they are getting a bit long in the tooth. Replacing a broken V8 is usually far cheaper then a busted TD5. Still having said that TD5's have a number of advantages that the V8's don't.

    cheers,
    Terry

Or, maybe buying a 2001/02 IS the way to go because they haven't been off road (due to no CDL).
That is, get a cheap ex Toorak tractor in good nick, low k's, low price, and spend a lousy $1000 putting a CDL in (as well as lots of other good stuff!).
I did this and never looked back.

    I've had 2 D!'s and a D2 2004

If you want off road ability, the D2 (even with out difflock) has better traction than the early D1 as they didnt have TC.

My D2a will go further than both my early D1's without the difflock engaged, just using TC

Maybe,, but unless your D2 has ACE the pre-update D1's have better articulation,,

I'm right and everything else is just another opinion...

..If budget isnt a worry then get a 2003 and lift it 2" and add a snorkel and bullbar.

If $$ are an issue get a 2000 V8 and spend a bit on an after market CDL (budget for $600) and a 2" lift.

But AT/Mud tyres and sheer ability are your biggest off-road improvers.
