Its amazing how all Td5 owners drive 1000kays between fuel stops.
Always.
and those stops have NOTHING inbetween.
no other towns, no food outlets, no pubs.
you guys are such social animals,,
sounds like fun "touring".![]()
Yep! that'd be me ...![]()
Over the last two years, and approx' 35,000km, averaging 15.22c/km for diesel (Td5 D2a auto) - on/off road
Approx $2600 PA for fuel. ($50/wk average)
over 100,000km works out to be $15,220 ($8480 cheaper) than your V8 ... 100,000km would be approx' 5.5 yrs for me.
When we were looking I did the sums, and with the intention of keeping the D2a for 10-15yrs, and paying 4-6k more for the diesel, the payback period was approx' 5yrs ... then the next 10yrs are cheaper. Servicing costs are going to be pretty similar.
A gas V8 is cheaper to run than the Td5 (and a V8 + fitting sequential injection gas would have been around the same cost as we paid for the Td5) but the lack of range makes it unsuitable for touring ... if it's a weekend play toy then a V8 on gas would make sense.

I'm not sure I'd want to if the distances are that far between pubs,,
Even a V8 can cross the Simpson with a couple of spare jerries,,
and the proportion of people who own a diesel to owners who actually see that sign would be quite small I'd think,,,![]()

Hold ups with range can be the difference between making 400-600 kms as you couldn't pass a town due to the servo being closed or out of fuel. Maybe get out and try it, you might convert when you get sick of carrying huge amounts of highly volatile liquid, stinking away. I got sick of not being able to do 600kays in the high country without jerry cans, they are a huge pain in the sphincter, anyway depends on what your doing, I'd prob have a 4l d2 over a td5 anyway.......less hassles![]()
I bought a V8 because:-
- Used V8's generally had about 2/3's the km's of a TD5
- The V8's are cheaper to buy
- The TD5 is a noisey harsh vibrating engine
- The V8 is nice and smooth
- I only travel about 150 km's per week
- It's a V8!
Australia's a BIG country Pedro ... you need to appreciate that it's a long way to/from work each day ... why, I can only get to/from work about 100 times on a tank ... barely acceptable ... and things like going to the pub, or doing groceries really do require the best part of a tank of dino juice.
I confess, I am a range hog![]()
