Which D2?

300tdi's got nothin in the Isuzu 4BD1!

I like range also. You don't have to carry jerries, and you don't have to keep stopping. As much as we all love to visit the servo, sometimes there are better things to do.... like anything.

I've fitted a 150 litre long range tank and have an additional sill tank still to put under for a total of 200 litres. My last desert trip went from Mungerannie, into the bottom of the desert, west a bit, north a bit, east a bit and then up the Hay River and I carried 150litres + 3 jerries of diesel. The V8 had a 150 litre tank also, a load of LPG and jerries in the trailer. The other great advantage not mentioned is when you're doing a long run at night and the town servos are all closed you can still do the full run and not have to stop purely because you cant get fuel.

The other good thing for me, is that local fuel is really expensive, and often I can buy in Sydney and that will keep me going for quite a while.

Okay, I'll rephrase that,

Compared to the V8, the TD5 is a noisy, harsh vibrating engine.

When I go touring, I have a camper with 4 jerry cans. Never found that to be an issue, as I am not touring every month or even every six months.

My V8 is just sweeeeeeet!

All of this talk about lack of mileage for a V8 is fine if your travelling across Australia on the dirt but in reality very few 4x4's ever see even dirt roads let alone going off road seriously or doing any long distance off road travelling.

I intend to do some long distance travelling towing our 2.5 ton dirt road van and because of that I brought a TDV6 because it has range, mind you only once you spend about 3k to 5k on long range tanks and rear wheel carriers.

If I wasn't towing 2.5 ton I'd be more than happy to travel through the out back in my V8 D2a and yes I would buy a long range tank to do it, but guess what I would also buy a long range tank if I owned a TD5. If I had to tow our off road camper long distances off road then I would still be tempted to buy a TDV6 as V8's do become very thirsty when towing anything of size.

For 99% of people though this whole discussion about how far a TD5 can go on a tank of fuel off road versus a V8 is purely academic.

For every day driving I like my smooth, quite and revvie V8 because it is fun to drive and I don't care how much it costs to fill it up. Each to their own if you want a TD5 that is fine by me.

While I had the 4.0 and the old auto I'd get one return trip to Nowra and maybe another 100k's. After the 4.6 and auto rebuild/upgrade I can get two return trips. It's the off road distances I still need to work out.

I love V8s, and don't really like diesels, nor am I a fan of turbos. But, when it came to getting my '04 D2a, I had to go with the TD5 as the day to day running costs are cheaper, and when it comes to rego time, I save $200 a year over a V8. To top it off, as has been mentioned before, there's more & cheaper options for mods.
