Blown rear diff & damaged housing

Blew a rear diff yesterday after a long day of off-roading on my d2a. I will try to source a 2nd hand diff and replace it asap. The problem is that bits inside the diff put a hole into the axle housing - see the pic. Does that mean I have to get a whole rear axle assembly or can I get the hole welded?

When you pull the centre clean it up, knock it back into shape and weld it up

This is also a great time to convince swmbo that a locker is a great investment.... you won't blow another diff if you do it..... you will if you don't
Honestly, the few hundred extra bucks give an enormous peace of mind. I blew mine out bush with a camper in tow. Not much fun. I now just look admiringly at the 3 switches (I have front and rear now, both diffs are **** weak as supplied by LR) and know I'll get wherever I want and back again

Many people are recommending against welding up the housing. I cant weld myself but know few people that can do it for me but stress on the material from the impact can apparently cause cracks in the future if just welded up... has anyone actually been down that road before?

I have seen several housings that have been welded up (old repairs) - they were fine. The only difficulty is the diff pan is thin and it is oily. That just means you have to clean it really well before welding, and use a MIG or TIG.

If you want to get serious you could weld on a pipe cap instead of that piece of tinfoil:
