    Reservations about buying a D2

    hello every one,

a family friend has a d2 for sale.

its is a 2003 model V8, automatic with 97,000km on it.
it has the new double circle head lights so i assume its a d2a?

it is really clean and everything but i have several concerns.

she has no service history, she doesn't know what model d2 (i will be having a look at it soon) its a V8 which worries me (heavy on fuel) and she has no information on the previous owners. also as i haven't had any past experience with land rover i am worried about the horror stories i have heard.

but she is asking <12k and it has really low miles on it

can any body help/offer feed back to help my in making my decision

    thanks

Interesting. My TD5 2004 with 160 on the clock was $14500 and full service history.

D2a by the sound. Price and milage are very good for that model. The 4l v8 is (almost) bulletproof but, as you say, a little thirsty. But with the price saving over the diesel you can drive a very long way. The V8 with even adequate maintenance should do well over 200K before requiring major work.

Horror shmorror. Everyone has a story. I had horrible noises from a V8, but as it had 250,000k and was running on gas without upper cylinder lube, and had been stroked to 4.3L (all before my ownership and wasn't I a mug to buy it) I don't think that counts.

The TD5 diesel has quirks and is best handled by someone who knows them. But the V8 was fitted to everything from MGs to Rover sedans to Range Rovers, bored and stroked to 5L in some cases. It's bog standard petrol V8 technology and any mechanic should be able to keep it going. Provided the car doesn't have airbag suspension there's nothing more to go wrong than any 8 year old car.

Hey you ! ... nothing wrong with airspring suspension ... so what if it's 8 years old and an airspring failS ?

20min to fit a new airspring, a pair new ex UK with postage for $210AUD ... there's another 10yrs.

Like I said/say (and many others) NOTHING wrong with airsprings ... what do trucks & busses run on ?

    Rant off

With no known history I'd be doing Revs and Wrecks checks in every state.

There's many a horror story of guys buying cars without histories [me] and when the paperwork goes through it's uh oh - there's a problem and it's no longer your car or it can't be registered. Be very careful. And it's only some simple PC checks as well as physically matching the Vin and engine numbers with the current paper work.

    No rant necessary

Nothing wrong with air springs - nearly said so myself but thought I'd keep the post simpler. But it IS one more thing to go wrong. How many "my car is lying down on the front lawn" threads have we had? But as you say, not particularly difficult or expensive to repair.

    Unrant off

A coiler with no ace is a very simple beast. It's not just air springs it's ride level sensors and the compressor also. I have coilright bags for towing - very effective and easy to use. I would not be put off by air springs. Likewise I would not chase one down nor pay much of a premium for it. Cheers

get a cylinder compression check done before purchase.

if all over/around 140, go for it.
anything else is just chump change,,

i think that it is a base model, so no ace or airbag suspension.

in regards to the V8... what fuel figures can i expects to get out of it (realistically) and if i were to go down the road of gas who would you recommend i get it done with here in perth

also as she has no information about it and no service history, what is a reasonable price to offer.

    thanks
