Thanks, INWC, great photo. Mine is a D2a so is it should be much the same? At the risk of appearing stupid, can you get to the drain from the engine bay or do you have to come up from underneath?

I ran into the same problem on my d2. I found the foam on the back of the kick board was damp after most rain showers, and the carpet wet after heavy rainfall.
Testing with a bottle of water and bonnet up it was pretty obvious that water was running under the lower windscreen trim strip then down the side of the air inlet. You can see a mark on the right hand side of the vent indicating where the water runs in It'sNotWorthComplaining!'s pic.
I wasn't confident that simply running sealant along the bottom lip was going to fix the issue so I removed the plenum so I could access the whole inlet. With the plenum off it was easy to see that the foam gasket on the passenger door side of the vent had started to decay where water caught on the top lip was running off.
The air inlet has captive nuts moulded into it so it was fairly easy to remove the bolts and apply sikaflex 227 around the mounting flange of the intake then bolt the intake back in place.

Is it damp when it doesn't rain? (The stereo-typlical view of Australia is warm and sunny ALL the time...)
Does it have sunroofs? If so, they leak like a sieve. The water sits in the headlining and will probably trickle down the A pillars and soak the carpet. I will admit though, that from the way you describe it, it's not likely to be this as you would have water dripping from the switch panel in the roof.
If it was a P38 I would say that the heater pipe o-rings were leaking. This is a common problem with them and can lead to the BECM dying.
Also some thing to be aware of, the water supply pip for the rear window runs through the bulkhead on the left hand side with a bundle of wires.
Mine has chaffed through and so squirts water on to the passenger carpet / feet!

Take the time to extend the a/c drains while you're there. Your DC joint and XYZ switch will love you for it.
I've found the duckbill drain that seems to be in OK shape, but I have a lot of water in the passenger footwell and no a/c drains underneath the car when parked...
So how do I access the drain to extend it? Is it a matter of ripping up the carpet (with I need to do anyway as it's so wet) via taking out the centre console? Nothing in RAVE about it.
I'm planning to extend the drains with some clear tubing.

Remove console. Then there's a triangular shaped air vent adjacent to the bottom of the glove box (hinge line). Remove it.
Lo behold. Behind it is the top of the vent pipe and the drain to which to connect to.![]()
